Re: San Francisco to Inspect Residents’ Garbage
But see? This is the cartoon version of what SF does. We banned plastic bags and have mandatory paid sick leave. Are those bad ideas?
Plastic bags are costly to everyone. Restaurant workers are a major cause of stomach flu (working while ill).
Although I compost, I am not sure his idea is a very good one.

Re: San Francisco to Inspect Residents’ Garbage
His idea is outrageous. It puts an unfair burden on single family home owners. It isn't fair to everyone in the community plus it's an invasion of privacy.
RI has mandatory recycling. If you don't recycle they won't pick up your trash in my home town. They could charge more by the amount of trash you put out. That would be fair and reasonable. It wouldn't cost a whole lot to implement either.
This is lunacy. I think if the city of San Francisco wants to mandate composting they ought to make composting affordable to people. That is nuts.
My husband is in the restaurant industry. Even when he didn't have paid sick leave he wouldn't go into work if he had a stomach flu. He has also worked in places where he's had to send sick employees home because although they have paid sick days, they want to save them for hunting season or beach season or pick your pasttime. They are irresponsible. The government can't legislate morality. It can't make you a better person.
San Francisco has made itself into a political cartoon. Don't blame the rest of the nation for pointing that out.

One you set it at the curb (a public right-of-way, in most places), you are giving it away. I don't think there is an expectation of privacy.

Re: San Francisco to Inspect Residents’ Garbage
Terry,
How are you? I drove Katie up to Cleveland last weekend and saw those purple bags hanging from trees on 77 from the WV border for about a 100 miles. Thanks to you and Jimmy I was able to tell my kids what they were for when Loyd asked.
I didn't see any on this side of the border though.
I don't find it unreasonable to object to government employees inspecting your trash. I also fail to see how this will be cost effective or better for the environment.....you know those garbage trucks will be out there longer spending much more time just idling while all that trash is being picked over.
Composting is great and a worthwhile goal. However, any financial or environmental benefits to composting will certainly be minimized and it places an unfair burden on people living in single family dwelling with additional government intrusion.
It seems to me it would be better for the city to hold workshops on composting and provide bins etc to citizens for a reduced cost.

Then take it to the landfill yourself. Once you put it to the curb, you are relinquishing ownership of it. I agree, the mandatory composting thing may be going a bit too far
Even if the trucks do take an extra moment or two, there is a net savings in energy. The electricity it takes to smelt the aluminum for one soda can can run a 19" TV for three hours, or so I have read.
I don't know if Ohio (the state, not the forum member) is hanging the purple traps this year.

There are purple traps in Ohio. lol
They aren't looking for soda cans, Terry. They are looking for egg shells, coffee grinds, and chicken bones. It's silly and I'm not sure it's all about the "energy". I think it's more about the environmental impact. Those garbage trucks burn a lot of fossil fuel while the people are inspecting the trash looking for evidence of pizza crusts and potato peels.
