A skeleton of a German man who shot and killed himself in a tree has been found by a hiker – nearly 30 years later.
Police said the 69-year-old retiree who had been missing since 1980 tied himself to the tree before firing the gun, Reuters reported.
His remains were discovered after an 18-year-old hiker found a bone in the forest last week and brought it to police, who then searched the area, Reuters reported.
"We found the skeleton up in the tree with the pistol hanging on a rope next to it," police spokesman Leonard Mayer was quoted as saying.
The body was identified through DNA testing and an artificial hip, Reuters reported.

Who the hell ties themself to a tree before committing suicide with a gun? I'm not buying it.

Who the hell ties themself to a tree before committing suicide with a gun? I'm not buying it.
Someone that wants to make sure their relatives collect their life insurance. Most western policies have suicide clauses in them.
There was a case where a person tied a gun to a balloon so it would float away, making a suicide look like a murder.

Steph, maybe he was a bird lover and didn't want the animals a chewing on his arse.
There was a man found dead in a tree in NY State. But it was during hunting season and when they autopsied the body they found 3 different calibre bullets in him.
Apparently there were 3 people who thought they had bagged themselves a bear.

Hey, people are strange and do all kinds of crazy things.
HOWEVER, if he were trying to get around a suicide clause in an insurance policy because he wanted his family to get the cash, it seems to me he would have made some sort of effort to off himself in a location where his body would be found. It takes a long time to have a missing person declared dead.
