The Israeli fuel blockade in Gaza is forcing the United Nations (UN) to suspend its humanitarian work in the region.

A UN official said that food aid and the collection of sewage will have to be halted on Thursday if more vehicle fuel isn't allowed into Gaza by Israel.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA) warned that its fuel supplies are due to run out today.

"Unless petrol is allowed in, UNRWA will discontinue its food assistance to 650,000 refugees, as well as its garbage collection services, which benefit half-a-million Gazans," assistant secretary-general for political affairs Angela Kane told a meeting of the UN Security Council.

"Another 500,000 Gazans are already living in 12 municipalities without any solid waste management capacity - largely due to the lack of fuel."

Israel did allow fuel to be delivered to the Gaza Strip's main power station this week, preventing a large-scale black-out.

The UN Security Council had been meeting to discuss the crisis in Gaza when some representatives walked out due to comments made by Libya.

Libyan ambassador Giadalla Ettalhi compared the situation in Gaza to the Nazi Holocaust, causing diplomats from the US, Britain, France and Belgium to leave the meeting.

"A number of Council members were dismayed by the approach taken by Libya and do not believe that such language helps advance the peace process," British official Karen Pierce said afterwards

Why don't they truck the fuel in through Egypt?

I have never understood why Egypt doesn't do more to help their neighbors, and fellow Arabs, in Gaza. Perhaps it has something to do with the peace agreement they have with Israel. Remember, Israel returned captured Egyptian land as part of that agreement. I'm sure they didn't do that simply out of the goodness of their hearts.

Whatever the reason, it is time Egypt and other nations, stepped up and helped the victims of Israeli aggression out before disease and starvation becomes rampant in Gaza.

Well gee whiz, there looks to be about 30 miles of Mediterranean coastline available to the UNRWA for smuggling fuel or whatever into Gaza.

And just why the hell aren't some of those 500,000 Gazans working to make that inoperable Gaza International Airport .......... operable?

Are they all so frigging busy trying to figure out "how to kill Jews" ....... that they don't have time to work on infrastructure that will benefit themselves?

Frankly, Stephanie, the only difference I can see between the Egyptians and the Israelis is that the Palestinians aren't lobbing twenty Qom missiles per day into Egypt. When the Israelis wall off those who would kill them they are creating a concentration camp. When the Egyptians repair the walls torn down by the Palestinians and put guards at the border they are just securing their borders. What's the diff?

Because I respect your opinion and do not believe you to be blindly anti-semitic I have come to the conclusion that we send entirely too much aid into Israel for too little in return. I'm moving in your direction but have some problems working up a lot of sympathy for the Palestinians.

The differences are many, and I'm not defending the Egyptians. I will highlight a few of the major differences between what the Egyptians are doing and what the Israelis are doing.

The Israelis control the airspace over Gaza. The Israelis control the Gaza coast. The Israelis have closed off the links between Gaza and the West Bank. They have sealed off the Palestinians from the rest of the world, nothing in, nothing out. It is the Israeli government that is bombing Palestinian hospitals, not the Egyptians.

I don't believe our government should send any of them any more money. They sure as hell shouldn't be sending them weapons and ammunition.

I have nothing against Jews. I have a HUGE problem with the Israeli government and Zionist extremists. I believe we should offer the Israelis safe haven in the USA and then let those who wish to stay to fend for themselves. I do not believe we should make that offer to the Palestinians. Too many of those people are straight nuts.

Our government pushed for a long time for free Palestinian elections. We don't like the results of the elections in Gaza so now we want to negate them. It isn't our place to determine who leads the Palestinians. That is their decision.

Hamas is regularly referred to as a terrorist organization by our government and in our media. What they fail to discuss is how and why Hamas came to power. Hamas is who helped their people receive food, medical care, and education during the Israeli occupation. It is easy to see why Gazans would elect them. While the rest of the world turned a blind eye to their suffering, Hamas helped them.

Neither Israel or the US ever gave Hamas the opportunity to run Gaza. I think this frustration on their part has lead them to the incredibly stupid actions they have taken. I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for the leaders of Hamas either. I do have a ton of empathy for the majority of Palestinians because they are just victims. Many people fail to remember that large numbers of these people are helpless children just caught in the crossfire. I never forget that.
