Repairing the Damage
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are in a race to see who can end free trade agreements quicker. I don’t understand. Mrs. Clinton was going to send Bill on a diplomatic mission around the world to repair relations with our allies. The two are not related you say?
France is our ally. Although since the French sent Lafayette and kept the British Navy busy during the Revolution the relationship has been a little one-sided. Nevertheless, France is still our ally and was even when the Congressional cafeteria was serving Freedom Fries with that burger. What was it that Boosh did to offend the French? Surely not sending Volcker out to finger the Banque Nationale de Paris as the bag man in the Oil-For-Food scandal? Now, in anticipation of repairing that rift Barack says "I don’t mind the Pentagon procuring from other countries. But when we you’ve got such an enormous contract for such a vital piece of our U.S. military arsenal, it strikes me that we should have identified a US company that could do it…" Having single-handedly revoked NAFTA I suspect the Senator sees nothing wrong with awarding a contract to Airbus and then reneging on it when Boeing whines.
Similarly, Canada is our ally. Would it be wrong for a candidate for President of the U.S. to claim that he or she would renegotiate a treaty ratified by the U.S. Senate and all the appropriate bodies of the partnering country? Canada seemed to think so. Well, they were unhappy until Austan Goolsbee assuaged their fears by averring that Obama “didn’t mean it”.
Did Mark Penn pre-emptively warn the Colombian ambassador that Mrs. Clinton “didn’t mean it” when she trashed the proposed Colombian treaty? I can’t say. Isn’t Colombia an ally? Isn’t Colombia an important ally in our backyard when Chavez is stirring the revolutionary stew?
As experienced diplomats go, these two are more dangerous than Bush. There’s going to be lots of damage to repair alright.

Re: Repairing the Damage
You should have your own blog. You're an excellent writer. I'm sure I don't want to hear the details of your rash. lol

I've thought about it but don't flatter myself that anybody really cares to read what I have to say. It is darn nice of you to say so and I appreciate it.

Well, I think you ought to consider giving it a try. Would you mind terribly if I forwarded that post to a few people I know that don't participate in this forum? Of course I would give you credit.

Re: Repairing the Damage
Can your first blog post be about your rash? Nevermind that nay-saying Stephanie, the people want to know!
The whole free-trade thing gets back to the Democrats Obama and Clinton really lacking convictions and/or the willingness to back those convictions up whenever the going gets tough. Despite my own continued opposition to so-called "free trade," the Democrats' own confusion and duplicity on the matter will not make them look good. If McCain insists on an answer yes/no on the question of NAFTA, CAFTA, et al., Obama will face a dilemna--lose face with nations' leaders or lose face with a significant portion of the Democratic base. McCain needs to play this game well, and I see great success if he does.

Re: Repairing the Damage
You know, McCain is the guy who went into Michigan talking candidly about free trade. As one might expect, he lost to the home-standing Romney. But he made some marks for speaking forthrightly. He may yet look like the only adult at the party.

Re: Repairing the Damage
I favor free trade, but it needs to be fair.
In my household, when someone carries on about something the another doesn't care to hear about, the offended party covers their ears and does the Iraqi woman shriek.
I took a time-out to cover my eyes and do the Iraqi woman shriek in protest to Jimmy's fungal infection.
