Braxton shrinking its middle school

BRAXTON COUNTY, W.Va.--As the Kanawha County school system moves forward with its plan to relocate Bonham, Flinn and Sissonville Elementary's fifth-graders to Sissonville Middle School, Braxton County is also preparing to move its fifth and sixth grades.

Back into elementary schools, that is.

For the 2008-09 school year, enrollment at the county's six elementary schools ranged from 206 students at Davis Elementary to just 81 students at Little Birch.

By contrast, Braxton Middle has 629 students and Braxton High School has 706.

The elementary school projects are funded by the 2008 school bond sale and the West Virginia School Building Authority, about $24 million in all.

YUP, in 1991 the BCBOE spent about $24 million to consolidate the 3 middle schools into one with 800+ students.

Now, in 2009 the BCBOE is spending another $24 million to un-consolidate the 5th and 6th Grades from the Middle School.

So, given the current student count of 629 at the Middle School and figuring 50% are 5th and 6th Graders, then the BCBOE is spending $24 million to keep 316 students in their Elementary Schools of origin.

Of course, I don’t think their plans of moving the BCBOE Offices out of that old building in Sutton ….. out to brand new Offices at the Middle School …… had anything to do with that un-consolidation, ……. do you?

lol! lol! lol!
