That flip flop policy was a damn DISTRICT policy. It wasn't a Capitol HS policy. The school board changed the damn thing. That wasn't the principal's call.

The dispute was over when it went into effect. The student and her mother read a news article stating the policy had been changed at the most recent board meeting. So the kid wore flip flops to school. The principal told her she couldn't wear them and she informed him the policy had been changed. He said it had not, she told him it was in the paper. He said he didn't care so she told him to call her mother and discuss it with her mother. So he suspended her.

The fact was the school board had indeed changed the policy. However, they didn't include an effective date so although some board members thought it was immediate, the Superintendent decided that meant it would go into effect at the beginning of the next school year.

That is the dispute. The principal didn't like that the girl told him to call her mother and discuss it with her mother. He is a twit.

I'm blaming the administrator because he handled the situation badly. He's supposed to be the adult. He should act like one.

"YES", Stephanie, ....... and Ziggy read in the newspaper that "George Bush lied about WMDs in Iraq" ........ and you probably think George is a twit because he didn't call Ziggy up and discuss the Iraq War Plans wth him.

Steph, that was not one of your better posts relative to sound reasoning and logical conclusions.

School Principals seldom if ever "take orders" from students or their mothers.

And I believe the principal didn't like it that the student showed NO RESPECT for his authority.

And I don't blame him one bit ....... because his AUTHORITY is authorized by the Superintendent, ......... not that student, her mother or the news article they read.

cheers

In WV ...... administrators are certified, ..... and it requires advanced "courses" to be certified.

Stephanie wrote:In RI, like in WV, teachers receive tenure. In RI it's after 3 years, I think that is very similar to here. In RI, administrators are NOT tenured. So in order to be an administrator there are these additional educational requirements and you lose the security of a job for life.

In RI, does one not have to be "certified and tenured as a Teacher" ...... before they can apply for and acquire those additional educational requirements to be certified as an administrator?

In WV they do, ..... and they do not lose said "teacher tenure" as long as they are employed by the School System.

GEEEZE, they don't even lose the "administrator pay grade" ...... if they quit the administrative position and return to a teaching position.

Yes, they must be certified and have enough years of experience to qualify for tenure....but they lose tenure (if they have it) when they become admins. In RI you lose tenure if you switch districts. The tenure law doesn't apply to administrators, well.....at least it didn't when I left. Who knows now, the RI General Assembly has had a couple of years to make public education worse since I left!

Frank and Sherm will sing the praises of capitalism before WV teachers or adminstrators ever give up tenure.
