Rockefeller family taking on Exxon Mobil
Jay Rockefeller says he's not part of group, but supports their actions
Members of the powerful Rockefeller family are clashing with the corporate giant that is Exxon Mobil, one of 34 oil companies spun off John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil.
Rockefeller's direct descendants, who are also company shareholders, are calling on Exxon to invest in alternative energy, treat global warming more seriously, and split its chief executive and chairman positions.
U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a great-grandson of the oil tycoon, says he isn't directly involved in his family's push for change at one of the most profitable companies in the world. The senator does not play any role in the decision-making on behalf of the company or the shareholders. Exxon Mobil is considered the world's largest energy company that is not state-owned.
But the West Virginia senator says he supports his extended family's actions.
"I was not aware of this decision by some members of my extended family to encourage Exxon Mobil to change its corporate approach until it was reported in the press," Rockefeller said in a statement.
"Over 30 years ago, I requested that all my personal assets be held in blind trusts. Therefore, I am not involved in any shareholder activities related to Exxon Mobil or any other company."
