Signs prod bus drivers to turn off engines

I wonder why no one posted this story on our Forum?

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Most of the time, students are the ones listening to rules and regulations on the first day of school. But around the state, schools have posted a gentle reminder to bus drivers encouraging them to be kind to the environment and their school board's pocketbook.

They (the signs) are provided to schools free of charge thanks to money the state Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Air Quality received from a federal settlement with a coal-burning utility. The funding, about $150,000, was earmarked for diesel emission reductions.

The department began producing the signs in 2007. After several drafts, the department finally decided on "Idle Free Zone - Students Breathe Here" because John Benedict, director of the department's Division of Air Quality, wanted a positive message on the signs.

"It's good for air quality. It's also good for economic reasons as well, because when you're idling you're getting zero miles to the gallon and you're not using your fuel most effectively," she said.

Isn’t that just peachy keen n’ wonderful that so many are worried about the environment and the school board's pocketbook.

I guess no one is the least bit concerned with this, to wit:

(American Lung Association) "Six out of 10 Americans right now as we speak live in areas where the air can be dirty enough to send people to the emergency room, dirty enough to shape how kids' lungs develop and even dirty enough to kill," said Janice E. Nolen.

No one concerned, ..... least of all any of the 55 County Health Boards.

So, I wonder where is the Kanawha County Health Board, …. playing the slots at the Nitro casino?
