Guess what will cost $5.4 million dollars a mile to move?
The ARES Rocket.
Now let me see, we are how far in debt? Oh yeah, 11.9 Trillion Dollars or 84% of the sum total of all the goods and services in the United States. We are just 16% away from bankrupsy so our illustrious government is going to spend $5.4 million dollars a mile to test the new space capsule.

Our future is in space, like it or not.
Energy, raw materials and, most of all, room to breathe.
Only a fool keeps all of his eggs in one basket.
BTW, most modern medical technology tools spun-off from NASA inventions for monitoring the astronauts.

I have no problem with space exploration. I, however, do have problems with the government doing it. As was proven by the Spaceship One folks, the private sector could accomplish far more with far less.

I have no problem with space exploration. I, however, do have problems with the government doing it. As was proven by the Spaceship One folks, the private sector could accomplish far more with far less.
I quite agree. Unfortunately, I can't see most companies risking the trillions needed for real advancement of a space program.

Why should the Federal government be risking trillions either? It is not in their place to do so.
The fact of the matter is that when the incentive is there then the private sector will will be willing to risk the money to go to space.

Obama also called for:
•A federal effort to inspire students to pursue science and engineering careers, particularly "clean energy" ones, through education and scholarships.
•A decade-long $42.6 billion budget-doubling for the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Standards and Technology and Energy Department's science office.
The nation now spends about 2.6% of its $14.2 trillion GDP on research and development, primarily in the defense industry, according to the National Science Foundation. Most of that development funding comes from industry, more than $270 billion, with federal agencies spending roughly $100 billion. Recent stimulus spending added $21.5 billion to the federal total this year.
