What do others think?

Do the rightwingers still think we should withdraw from the UN and police the world ourselves?

I'm a rightwinger. I find it attractive to withdraw from the UN. I'd also find it attractive to police our own borders. Do I detect a belief that you think we should let the UN police the world? They seem to have more of an interest in gang-raping it one war-torn country at a time.

Well OC we are batting 500 on that one.

I agree we should police the borders.

(contrary to the bush doctrine btw)

But I believe the UN is very beneficial in helping to promote better international cooperation and diplomacy vs warfare.

Sherm,

I'm a rightwinger. I favor withdrawal from the UN and using our armed forces to patrol our ports and borders. I'm not into policing the world. Europe needs to deal with the Russians. I suggest we stop importing from Russia.

That's what this rightwinger says.

Tell me, what has Congress done about border security? What meaningful legislation have they passed? What meaningful legislation have they worked on? What have Barack Obama, or Hillary Clinton, or Joe Biden, or Nancy Pelosi, or Harry Reid, or Jack Reed, or any of the Kennedys done about border security?

Please, enlighten us all.

Sherm, if you are referring to Bush, I think Stephanie has told us several times that he is no longer her guy- that she regrets having voted for him.
What was that you were telling us about forgiveness and redemption or some such .................

I am calling Boosh her guy because she keeps saying all the Dems are my guys.

She even says I favor abortion, etc. because the Dems dont demagogue and claim they will end the option for women in violation of a Supreme Court ruling.

So if they are my guys then Boosh is her guy since she is a staunch republican.

I'm curious to your response to Jimmy's article Sherm.

You did read Jimmy's article, which deals directly with the topic of this thread.

And as you crave meaningful debate, you do have some sort of comment, don't you and not just more partisan bs post, correct Sherm!!!

So what did you think of the 'actions' of the peacekeeping forces in Somila?

Aaron,

The US pays over 25% of the peacekeeping budget. Americans who support US involvement in the UN need to be forced to face the reality of the situation. We're financially supporting human rights violations committed by so-called "peacekeepers" who are never made to pay for their crimes, similar to the way we're financially supporting human rights violations committed by the Israelis. As long as we continue to send them the money to commit these acts and the perpetrators are never held accountable for their actions, things will continue to worsen. The question is, do those who drink the New World Order Koolaid care?

No, I don't think they do. I believe there are many out there that think we can be one world (including one blinded poster we know) but what they don't realize is that in becoming one world, we give up our hard earned rights and freedoms.

They overlook and ignore atrocities like these you and Jimmy have noted and when they are brought to the light of day they make excuses or question the source.

For some, the ends justify the means so long as it is there ends. Otherwise, they cry the loudest and the longest.

Well Steph thanks for the info.

I had not seen any of those reports.

I would agree with the steps suggested in your "heritage" link. to-wit:

There are several specific steps that Congress, the Administration, and the U.N. itself can take to increase oversight of U.N. peacekeeping operations, improve accountability and transparency, and help ensure that U.N. personnel guilty of criminal behavior are prosecuted:

Hold hearings: Congress should hold hearings to address the incidents of sexual exploitation committed by U.N. peacekeeping personnel in the Sudan and call senior U.N. officials to testify.
Investigate abuses: The United States should call for a Security Council-backed independent investigation into abuses by peacekeepers and civilian U.N. personnel in the Sudan, Congo, and other major U.N. peacekeeping operations, including Haiti, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Burundi.
Establish a watchdog: An external oversight body—completely independent of the U.N. Secretariat and backed by a Security Council mandate—should be established to act as a watchdog over U.N. operations, including humanitarian programs and peacekeeping operations. This watchdog organization would enforce the high standards that should be required of U.N. peacekeeping personnel.
Establish U.S. oversight: The United States should also set up its own U.N. oversight unit, answerable to Congress and specifically charged with monitoring the use of American contributions to United Nations peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. This could be funded by diverting part of the annual assessed contribution to the United Nations.
Push for prosecutions: The United States should pressure U.N. member states to prosecute their nationals accused of human rights violations while serving in U.N. peacekeeping operations. The U.N. should lift diplomatic immunity for its own staff accused of criminal acts in the Congo and Sudan, opening the way for prosecution.
Identify perpetrators' countries: The U.N. should publicly name and shame those countries whose peacekeepers have carried out abuses in the Sudan, Congo, and other parts of the world.
Exclude past abusers: Washington should press for the U.N. Security Council to exclude from future operations countries whose peacekeepers have a history of human rights violations unless they demonstrate a commitment to trying and punishing their nationals accused of criminal behavior. Individual peacekeeping personnel involved in sexual exploitation should be immediately blacklisted from participation in all future peacekeeping missions.
Improve transparency: The U.N. should make public all internal reports relating to the Sudan and Congo abuse scandals and outline the specific steps it plans to take to prevent the sexual exploitation of refugees in both existing and future U.N. peacekeeping operations.
Withhold contributions: Congress should withhold a percentage of the U.S. contribution to U.N. peacekeeping operations unless U.N. personnel responsible for criminal activity are prosecuted and safeguards are put in place to prevent future abuses.

I disagree it's a case of what's good for the goose.

You are voting for Obama...a man who is unwilling to criminalize even partial-birth abortions, simply because he is the Democrat running. You don't believe he has the experience necessary to be a good President, as recently as a couple of months ago you were very criticial of him but now you say you'll "withdraw your support" of Obama if he selects Sam Nunn. lol Obama has no foreign policy experience, in fact, the man hasn't got much experience in any area of critical importance to America at this time. What he does have is a (D) after his name.

I am not voting for John McCain, although he is a Republican, because he is telling the American people he believes in nation building and has every intention of continuing and escalating US aggression in the Middle East. He has no intention of ending the decades old practice of continuing to provide US money for bullets and bombs through foreign aid and the UN. Like Obama, he doesn't seem at all interested in curing the root causes of the ills in our economy.

I'm a Republican who is willing to speak openly and honestly and criticize those in my party who don't do what's best for America and Americans.

You, on the other-hand, are a Democrat blind to everything but the letter after a candidate's name.
