I dont see how the Packers could have screwed this up any worse.

Why would anyone hire the Bush pr guy?

How did the Packers screw it up. They told him he could compete for the job? Farve was the one that said he couldn't get past the ill feelings.

Nope. But neither were 49'er fans when Joe M. went to Kansas City...until they won a superbowl. Rodgers playing well will make them forget.

I'm really surprised at the strength of this controversy. Didn't Favre first retire after the 2006-2007 season? When he came back wasn't it right before pre-season camp? How many years in a row are you willing to do that? I appreciate that Favre has a big heart and took them to the NFC playoff last season. But I had to laugh when Favre said he didn't want to be a "distraction".

How could you read the article you linked and come out criticizing the Packers? Was your Boosh hatred the whole reason for this post?

Yes Jimmy that was Sherman's one and only point. The Packers hired Ari Fliescher so they must be at fault.

And no, Farve didn't retire last year. He just spent the entire off-season speculating as to whether he would or not, holding the Packers hostage to the point that they didn't know what they were going to do. He's done the same thing for the past 2 years, not committing to coming back until right before training camp.

This year, he was pretty much told, make a decision before the draft so we know who is on our team and what we have. He didn't like that at all. Seems he wants to be coddled.

Last year after the Packers lost to the Giants in the playoff's, I read an article in which the author questioned Farve starting OVER Rodgers last year.

It's pure speculation but I think the Packers got to the point this year that they felt like they are just as good, if not better with Rodgers instead of Farve and they no longer feel like they have to kiss his butt.

I had to laugh when I saw a Favre quote to the effect that he didn't want to be a distraction. I got the impression that's all he wanted to do.

On the other hand, Rodgers was a JUCO transfer, had one good year at California, and went a year early in the draft. Tough to make a case for him...

Rodgers has also been a Packer for 3 years and has been spoon fed the entire offense. Unlike many first round QB's, he won't be out there lost, trying to figure it out with 350 lb D-linemen breathing down his back running for his life. He's got a good offense with a veteran O-line and a solid running game playing in a weak division.

Green Bay will win 10 to 12 games, their division and have a nice run in the playoff's and while some will grumble about Farve by the end of the year, the number will shrink and in a matter of a year or two, he'll be done.

In the end Farve will sign a 1 day contract to retire as a Packer ala Emmit Smith in Dallas.

As for Farve, the longer this has went on, the more I think his true self has come out. He's a prima donna pro QB who HAS to be needed, coddled and worshipped and he wasn't getting that anymore from the Packers. He'll fit in nicely in NY, at least for now.

Favre is a fierce competitor and tough as nails especially for a QB.

He is also a motivator and team leader.

Not to mention a talented athlete.

So not only did they lose Favre, they also alienated most of their own fans.

Well, Sherm, I am a Packers fan as is the preacher of the Methodist church with which I share a yard.

I think losing Favre is a disaster, as he is an icon for the Packers. I don't trust Rodgers. My only consolation is that I do not have cable and will likely not see more than one game this year.

I don't think hiring a Bush guy is a disaster and I think people will quickly move on to more important matters. Like beating the Bears, which is something they failed to do twice last year.

Sherm, this thread just shows how low you will sink in regard to your pathetic partisans bs.

Brett Farve orchestrated this entire fiasco because he wanted out of Green Bay.

He is completely responsible for this and the only reason you say otherwise is because of a hire that has zero effect on the football operations of the team.

And the best you can come up with is he's a team leader. Most of the team wanted him gone last year when he started the retirement crap.

By the time he finished this year, pretty much the entire team wanted him gone.

You know less about football then you do politics.

Sheesh!!!

And despite spending most of the past three seasons holding a clipboard, Rodgers didn’t show many signs of nerves in his first step out of Favre’s shadow. The Bengals tagged Rodgers for an early interception off a deflection, but he recovered to complete 9 of 15 throws for 117 yards and a touchdown.

source

It's only a pre-season game but maybe the coaches and management in Green Bay knew what they were doing after all when they decided they would no longer be held hostage by an AGING superstar with dimished capabilities.

HMMM.

Well my criticism was not of the new QB.

I am sure he is a good player and a nice guy.

My criticism was of the way the pr was handled.

Especially the pr with their own fans.

I bet if there was a poll of packer fans they would agree with me.

(and they probably dont even know who the pr guy was...)

Protably not - only a Boosh-hating loon would know.

Let me see if I have this correctly: two years running Favre starts making noises at the end of July after having made a formal retirement announcement, crying, etc. First week of training camp, he wants to show up and play. To hell with PR, that's no way to run a team. Either he wants to retire or he doesn't.

Why should Packers management kiss Favre's (that's a tough name to spell) butt? He's thirty-five years old. Yes, he's more likely to lead the Pack to a winning season this year but he's become a prima donna. If he can't ascertain when it's time to go, management will show him.

He's 38 Jimmy and there were grumblings last year from 'unidentified sources' that felt the Packers were better off with the 24 year old Rodgers as their starting QB.

Look better? It's a no-win situation. I suspect in the end the green and gold crowd still loves the green and gold. Where else they going to go? Minnesota?

I'm still waiting Sherm. Given the fact that Brett Farve instingated every action in this situation including telling the coach and the GM that he couldn't forget everything that had been said when told he could compete for the starting job and instead reiterated DEMANDS to be traded to a division foe so he could play the Packers TWICE a year to humilate them, how would you have been more compassionate, considerate and respectful of Brett Farve?
