"When you look at the House Education Committee, 14 of the 25 committee members have some connection with education -- they are a school bus driver, service personnel, a teacher or a former teacher," Plymale said.

However, House Education Chairwoman Mary Poling, D-Barbour, does not buy the argument that the educator-dominated committee is less willing to reform the system.

"Heaven forbid we have all that expertise in education right out of the classroom," Poling, a former educator, said Monday.

"It's real easy to say, 'Look at them, they're teachers,' " she said, "but I think it's our expertise that gives good policy."

Poling said she didn't believe her committee had been given credit for some of the reforms they have taken on.
