Cecil Roberts Channels Bill Blizzard

Cecil Roberts explains what Bill Blizzard was thinking as he climbed Blair Mountain:

Who knew Bill was friends with Sid Hatfield, the hero of Matewan? Sid, if the truth were known, was a borderline idiot who recreated his heroic acts for the silent cameras of 1921. That he was police chief of Matewan had more to do with his failure as a bootlegger. One suspects his official capacity was fueled by his desire to cuckold Mayor Testerman. Mrs. Testerman was with Hatfield when he was gunned down on the McDowell County courthouse steps. Ascribing heroic motives to Sid Hatfield is mythology at its worst. Sid was immediately behind the Mayor at the Matewan train station where the mayor died of gunshot wounds to the back of his head. What's more, Cecil was right about the Baldwin-Felts guards being thugs. Sid and the mayor were at the station to slaughter Baldwin-Felts thugs arriving in Matewan. How does that make him a hero?

Isn't it funny how some criminals are sort of romanticized?
