Mingo County consolidation battle- follow the money

Post by ziggy on Sat Mar 19, 2011 2:00 pm

The state school system has claimed such consolidation saves money and improves academic opportunities, although there is little proof. Certainly, there is little justification with the high cost of diesel fuel added to the state already having the costliest bus system in the USA.

Bill Duty, a member of the Mingo board, says the total cost of building the consolidated school is not available, but projected costs of getting water and sewage back on the mountain could be $8-9 million.

The water and sewage costs are just a drop in the bucket.

Board member Duty, who has frequently used Freedom of Information requests to get answers, said Mingo is under a court order to move forward with the consolidated school. He says “I’m confused about the court order ‘making’ us [board members] move forward when the state controls the school system.”

I spent some time down that way, and I recall quite clearliy that "getting around" was not easy at all. Not only will you have the cost of diesel fuel and new construction, but also the time paid to bus drivers and the social cost of waking kids up at 6 am just to catch the bus.

Mike, social costs and diesel fuel costs are unimportant when talking school renovations or constructions.

But now this is, to wit:

projected costs of getting water and sewage back on the mountain could be $8-9 million.

The water and sewage costs are just a drop in the bucket

Mike, iffen they don't spend at least $14 to $20+ MILLION ...... how in hell do you figure the person they bought the land from and all the contractors, etc. are going to make a BIG profit off the project?

This school is being built on a former Mountain Top Mining site and as such, WV politicians should have forced the mine to foot the bill for running the water and sewer to the school. Yet because WV politicians didn't force the coal comany to provide the utilities to the site, the coal company will somehow be blamed by those on the far right while the WV politicians will be excused.

As for the cost of operating the buses, that's pretty much a was as anyone who knows anything about Mingo County can understand. This school is a consoladation of 4 high schools, Williamson, Burch, Gilbert and Matewan high schools. It sets at about as close to the center of the 3 of those schools as it can with Williamson being the furthers school away. Instead of having two buses going up holler to pick up half bus loads of kids to go to two different schools, one bus can go up the holler and pick up a full bus load of kids.

As for the Williamson kids, less then a quarter will attend the new high school. Some are already going to Belfry High School, hence Williamsons actual enrollment of about 120 kids and some are choosing to go to Tug Valley High School.
