School official questions painters' overtime
Workers have already collected about $80,000 in extra pay this school year
Kanawha County school officials are questioning the amount of overtime pay school painters have been racking up in recent years.
So far this school year, the county's 10 painters have collected $79,870 in overtime, or roughly $1,000 a month per painter, according to records from the maintenance department.
During the entire 2006-07 school year, they made about $139,368 in overtime.
Their regular pay averages about $16 an hour, said Terry Hollandsworth, administrative assistant for the school system's maintenance and energy department.
School board member Pete Thaw raised concerns about the overtime and said changes must be made to the painters' work schedules.
"It's crazy," Thaw said. "Overtime is caused by bad management. It's just more of the reasons we don't need to raise the levies and taxes to people."

Re: KC School Painters ....... love to paint.
Turn all that overtime into comp time off work.
Then SamCoagar and Pete Thaw will be happy.

$139,368.00 dollars is 8,710 man hours, or 4 full time employees. If you're paying that much in OT, why not hire additional personnel and save some money?

HA, then instead of having 10 employees charging all that overtime you would have 14 employees charging even more overtime.
Last Wednesday morning when the BCMS cooks came to work at 6 AM they discovered the water heater in the kitchen was not working and called Maintainence to fix it. Two (2) Maintainence men soon showed up and sat around there tinkering with it getting it to "half-way work" ..... and stayed the rest of the day doing the same, turning the water off when they left.
Thursday morning they both were there by 6:15 AM, turned the water back on and repeated what they had done on Wednesday.
Friday, another repeat of Wednesday and Thursday.
Sometime between Friday evening and Monday morning someone replaced a part and the water heater is working normally again ...... and "running" brown colored water as it normally does.
cheers

Like Mr. Thaw said, that's mismanagement. That's what happens when the inmates run the asylum, government workers are in charge or you have a union environment. They're all doomed to fail miserably because they have no leadership.

The painters don't get all the credit, ........ I mean overtime cash "windfall".
School system's overtime pay already tops $1.2 million
The Kanawha County school system has racked up $1.2 million in overtime payouts this school year.
More than half of that - $744,173 - has been paid to workers in the maintenance department. The Kanawha County schools budget this year is $218 million.
"We've got to have a handle on this," said school board member Pete Thaw. "I think we've got to be more active in this."
Thaw said he intends to ask for monthly overtime statements at tonight's school board meeting.
Superintendent Ron Duerring instructed Terry Hollandsworth, the director of the maintenance department, to only pay overtime in emergency situations in an attempt to curb the figure, said Harry Reustle, Kanawha County school treasurer.
The situation is similar to last year when about $1.5 million was paid in overtime. A majority of that - $955,343 - went to maintenance, also.
