W.Va. college coaches allegedly pocketed revenues from camps
Revenues from 10 athletic camps hosted by West Liberty University over the last several years ended up not with the West Virginia public college, but instead in the personal bank accounts of coaches, an audit released to legislative leaders Tuesday said.
Two of those coaches, in the men's basketball and football programs, failed to report $80,000 from these proceeds on their state or federal income tax returns, according to the audit report covering the 2008 through 2010 budget years said.
One of the men told auditors "that he was a basketball coach and not a businessman, and was unaware that he should report this income," the report said. It does not name any individuals, or list the total revenues from the camps, which hosted junior high and elementary school athletes.
