Are you suffering from a habit or an addiction?
Whether it's food or drugs, addiction is the same, new study finds
Davis and her colleagues at Toronto’s York University recruited 72 obese men and women, ages 25 to 45, and gave them a questionnaire designed to identify people addicted to drugs or alcohol.
The addiction scale, developed by Yale University researchers, focuses on seven symptoms, such as repeatedly trying to quit without success and stopping social and recreational activities.
The researchers made one teensy change on the questionnaire: They replaced the word “drugs” with “food.”
But, like drug addicts and alcoholics, the food addicts were more likely to have other psychological issues. They were three times more likely than other study participants to meet the criteria for binge-eating. Depression also was more common among the food addicts, and they exhibited more symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
Animal studies have suggested that foods high in sugar and fat have a similar effect on the brain as alcohol and other drugs of abuse, Davis says. “Alcohol is just fermented sugar. They work on our brain reward pathways in the same way.”

HA, one does not crave a candy bar because they are addicted to sugar.
If one was addicted to sugar then they would be craving a sugar bowl and a spoon with which to eat it with.
And alcoholics don't crave sugar bowls either.

Have I ever told you guys about my grandmother's sister, Lara? Her daughter used to catch her in the middle of the night mixing sugar in plain water and drinking it. She weighed well over 500 lbs and was in her 80's when she died.

Steph, that is what I find so infuriating about media and government pronouncements. They are so sure of their own wisdom, and then, person after person, someone lives well past the expectation, and most times happier than those following the rules.
Should I have that third burger? Might I be addicted? I don't much care, dead cow is delicious!
Can I live 10 extra years on tofu? Maybe. Would I like to? Nyet!
It is almost an act of patriotism, in fact, I think it is downright patriotic in keeping with our founders' intentions, to enjoy your beer, your cigarette, your twinkie, and to be grateful to God (or hostess) and move on with your life, than defer to most anyone else in you decisions of eating and exercise.

Re: Are you suffering from a habit or an addiction?
Addiction is the problem. Sugar, drugs, coffee, cigarettes or internet porn are only the topics. Addicts, regardless of the topic, no their behavior is unacceptable, they simpley cannot quit. Researchers are focusing on that aspect of addicts and brain activities and are finding the frontal lobe plays a major role in addiction. There are some scientist who actually believe there will one day be a cure for addiction.

No, Aaron. The whole "I cannot shake this" is bilge in 90% of cases. There are cases in which withdrawal will kill you, and there are, to be sure, physiological issues. However, people need to be given more credit, and responsibility, than they are given.
Sure, there are brain activity consequences of having developed an insatiable craving for anything, be it sex, alcohol, twinkies, and gambling. Yet, people are free moral agents, able to avoid brothels, bars, candy aisles, and casinos.

The Roscitis were called the "Iron People" by the Marroccos. Grandma died in March 2010 less than 3 months shy of her 93rd birthday. She was extremely overweight from the time I can remember her and had survived breast cancer in her 70's. She smoked when I was a kid, but quit by the time I was an adult. She was a diabetic the last 20 years of her life, but only insulin dependent for about 4. She couldn't beat colon cancer. For that matter, neither did her husband. That doesn't sound so good for my dad and his sisters.
Re: Are you suffering from a habit or an addiction?
Wait, what am I talking about? Grandpa smoked like a chimney and drank like a fish and lived to 84. Grandma smoked for 35 years or more, ate to her hearts content and she lived to 92. None of their children smoke or drink other than socially. Barring an accident they'll probably see 100 or more.

Cigarettes finally killed my mom at 74 and she only smoked for 67 years.

Re: Are you suffering from a habit or an addiction?
The only difference between a habit and an addiction is the person making the claim.
I have a smoking habit, ……. you are addicted to nicotine.
My behavior is unacceptable, …… your behavior is unavoidable.
Researchers don’t know crapolla about what plays a major role in addiction. Via use of their fMRI scanning they only know that there is brain activity occurring in the frontal lobe. They could do an fMRI scan of a horse’s brain and know just as much. Or, an fMRI scan of your PC’s “brain”.
The majority of the scientific community doesn’t understand the basics of how the human mind functions and thus 99.9% of the populace doesn’t understand it either. Therefore it is not surprising that “some scientist actually believe there will one day be a cure for addiction”.
There will never be a cure for addictions …. or habits … because they are the root “mechanisms” that determine the human psyche. The root “mechanisms” that are the result of one’s nurturing ….. and thus the reason that “You are what your environment nurtured you to be”.
Close your eyes, extend only the index finger on your right hand …… and then touch your right ear lobe with only the tip of your index finger.
Do that right now, ……. don’t wait.
.
.
You did it, didn’t you?
Now do it again.
Now tell me that was not a learned (nurtured) habit.

Did you figure that out for yourself, Aaron?
And you disagree with me most all the time ..... but that doesn't make you a real live, honest to goodness practicing and trained anything that I know of. Of course you could be harboring a secret of some sort.
But the difference between you and me, Aaron, is that I don’t judge a person’s intelligence and competence by the type or number of Degrees they have ….. or by who they are employed by.
Unlike you, their social status does not impress me in the least.
And geeeeze, Aaron, ...... I am curious, ....... do you really have to be looking into a mirror to be able to touch your ear lobe .... on the first try ..... with the tip of your index finger?
How about when scratching an itchy spot on your ass, ...... same thing?
