Computers grade Westest essays

Every year, thousands of West Virginia students are assessed on essays that go largely unread by human eyes.

Instead, a computer grades the vast majority of responses for the writing portion of the Westest.

"This computer has, in a sense, been taught how to read West Virginia essays," said Dr. Bill Mullett, Kanawha County director for counseling and testing.

The writing portion of the Westest is given a few weeks before the rest of the exam and accounts for roughly 40 percent of a student's language arts score, Mullett said.
