Working after school long hours grading test papers?

Computers grade Westest essays

Every year, thousands of West Virginia students are assessed on essays that go largely unread by human eyes.

Instead, a computer grades the vast majority of responses for the writing portion of the Westest.

"This computer has, in a sense, been taught how to read West Virginia essays," said Dr. Bill Mullett, Kanawha County director for counseling and testing.

The writing portion of the Westest is given a few weeks before the rest of the exam and accounts for roughly 40 percent of a student's language arts score, Mullett said.
