Who's crying now?
Imagery in Bastrop school mural stirs controversy.
Bastrop resident Lauren Hansell, who made the original complaint, homeschools her children but visits the school on Fridays to pray with students at the flagpole.
Bear in mind, the mural also contains christian symbology.
Are we that used to christians being "first among equals" in this country?

Re: Who's crying now?
TerryRC,
There were non-religious reasons why some opposed the mural as well.
But if your point is that too much of a big deal was being made about the mural by Hansell and others, I agree. Just like too much of a big deal is made about the 10 commandments being up on courthouse lawns.
Like you, I do not have the Constitutional right not to be offended. The mural should stay up if that's what the local government/school board wants, and I have the right, if a local resident to ignore it.
Tolerance, TerryRC. It's beautiful when practiced by the devout AND the secular.

Re: Who's crying now?
If you want the 10 c's in a courtroom, fine. Just so long as you put other items from the history of our law, from Lipit-Ishtar's Code through Hammurabi's Code, through Roman Law and the Magna Carta to the rules of the Iroquois Confederacy.
Our law is not based on christian law and the 10 c's shouldn't be the only religious symbology in the courtroom, except as part of a historical display.
The other thing is that nobody was compelled to do this mural. the students designed it, the students executed it.
Note one of the people complaining wants the mural removed on 1st amendment grounds but then exercises her 1st amendment rights by praying at the school flag every Friday.
"We have met the enemy and he is us."

Re: Who's crying now?
Terry,
You'll notice that I think the mother should find something better to do, like spending more time at home schooling her child.
I was merely saying that what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Kids have always been allowed to pray in public school in this country. The only thing that is changed is that the school can't force it on anyone.
What this woman is learning is that the sauce is good for both birds.
You do agree that, since our law is NOT based on judeo-christian law, the 10 c's have no place in a courtroom except as part of a historical display?

Re: Who's crying now?
They were outraged. And you have a problem with that, why. Do they not have a first amendment rights to express their outrage? Just because they are a religious group, are they not allowed to express they're opinions.
Same thing with the woman in the initial story. She has a right to express our opinions and her outrage. That doesn't mean the mural should be taken down but you or no one else has the right to 'censor' her and keep her from expressing her opinion.
I thought you were against censorship TC?

Aaron. I agree that they all have a right to speak their piece.
I was just pointing out that christians "whine" just as much as the atheists do, perhaps even more.

I don't think you've proved that point at all, Terry. One inconsistent person of the majority religion in a nation does not prove anything.

And whoever is protesting Starbuck's should grow up, agreed, but this is a very small sample of a very large group of believers.

Sheik, there are examples of this in about every community I've been in.
This attitude is by no means rare.
If you look , you will find sources filled with this sort of thing. It doesn't usually hit the national news because, for some reason, religious people are treated with more respect than the atheists.
It makes much better news when you focus on the people that are "trying to take god out of our country".

Well geeeze Aaron, isn't $3 bucks a cheap price for carrying a "status symbol" aroooound to show off to all your friends and even strangers?
With a pair of those $150 designer jeans on and a Starbucks coffee cup in your hand ........ then youse got Class.

I'm not big on status symbols Sammy and the closest I've come to being referenced to having class was without the CL.

I don't care what Stephanie says- a guy who can laugh at hisself, and love a dog that looks like that, and have it love him back, can't be all bad.

These protestors really are shooting at shadows, aren't they? Why protest the mermaid when you can almost assuredly make as good a cup of coffee at a lower price. We have two local coffee houses right here that seem to be getting along just fine (and by right here I mean po-dunk Marseilles, not that slightly larger and better known city 65 miles to the northeast).
Maybe these protestors could name a place "The Prudish Cafe" and have as their symbol a nun threatening you with a ruler if you don't behave.

The fact that they don't use shade-grown coffee (doesn't contribute as much to loss of flora and fauna and tastes better) and are willing to stick their tacky shops in places that mar historical sites is more than enough for me to never use them.
