I believe, as most do, that the program would run a deficit in the future anyway because more is going to be paid out than will be coming in. During all those years that the program has run a surplus the money is set aside in the fund to pay for such events. We all know it's true that the Government has deposited the IOUs and spent much of the surplus on various projects they've deemed necessary.

That's not what I read but I we'll never know becasue DHHR and SSID are sucking the fund dry faster then the government can steal it for every pet project coming down the pike, right!!!

We can just as easily be questioning whether two more years or Democratic control in Congress is such a great thought. We were promised "change" back then, too, and things certainly are worse!

I put the blame squarely on both parties for failing to live up to their own principles, let alone the American public's.

Well Sheik last election it was summed up best by the bumper sticker on my son's car.

And that pretty sums up my attitude about the two parties.

The Dems suck less.

You're saying the Democrats, and the Democrats alone are to blame for the freaking mess this country is in because they don't put forth candidates who suck less than the GOP candidates? OMG

I blame the GOP. Yessiree I do and I'm going to tell you why. Liberals are killing this nation. We know this. All of this wealth redistribution and crazy ideas like cradle to grave care and so on are destroying this once great nation. Instead of fighting what they know is wrong with every fiber of their beings, the Republicans are saying WTF! if we can't beat 'em let's join 'em. Americans don't vote for liberty, they vote for programs. We need to offer more programs, bigger government, more regulation.

GWB initially ran on a platform most conservatives could agree with. He used our fear of terrorism and the hysteria created by a couple dozen lunatics as an excuse to infringe on our liberty and build an empire. It's sickening to me that I voted for him the second time.

When I think about what an idiot I was for voting for him a second time I am truly ashamed. If I were a dishonest person I would lie about it and admit to only casting a ballot for him the one time.

The problem with the leaders of the GOP is pretty much the same problem of the leaders of the Democrats. They think the American people are too lazy and stupid to take care of themselves. Sadly, they may be correct. After all, we did vote for the W a second time.

Mind you Sherm & others, I'm not saying Kerry was a better choice. I suppose he couldn't have been too much worse. I try to console myself with judicial appointments, but I'm nowhere near convinced those appointments I'm so pleased with now will not turn around and bite us all in the hind end in coming years.

Both parties suck. Our "choices" are abysmal. I'm not going to vote for the GOP or the Democratic nominee this time around but I am not foolish enough to think for one stinking moment that we're not going to be screwed over by one or the other of them for at least the next four years.

That is assuming things don't get too much worse in the interim that we don't end up with some sort of violent uprising. I'm not so sure that isn't now a distinct possibility. Rough times are here, rougher times are on the horizen. We're about to find out just how docile the American people have become.

What I said Stephanie is that democrats are to blame for GWB being in office as the nominated two individuals so much worse then GWB that America had little choice but to elect GWB, as bad as he is. That does not excuse him for his actions.

Well then there is plenty of blame to go around isn't there? I still blame the Republicans more. As a party the GOP should have nominated a better candidate just as the Democrats should have nominated a better candidate. I blame Republicans more because we put forth and voted for a candidate we knew didn't abide by conservative principles. The Democrats just did what they always do, what I expect them to do, they nominated a liberal.

As citizens we must take personal responsibility for the results. We did, in fact, nominate these pathetic choices. We can do better, we must.

I agree, we nominate poor choices for our leadership and government but the problem partially lies in who is willing to run. And to me, you have to look at why the Collin Powel's and other qualified candidates of the world choose not to run.

Collin Powell has a very smart wife.....or so it would seem. lol

And he would have made have made a great President in 2000 but he chose not to run because he said he wouldn't subject his entire family to the news media.

I would have voted for him had he chosen to run back then. I think he just didn't have the stomach for it and his wife laid down the law. I wouldn't blame her if she did. For me it would be about a whole lot more than just the media.

I think he had TOO much stomach for it. A depression era black man from Harlem doesn't rise to the rank of Chairman of the Joint Cheif of Staff without some stomach.

President is a whole other ballgame, Aaron. I think he should have run. I wish he had run. He disappointed the black community greatly by not running. I think he had a responsibility to people of color and to the GOP to run and he let them both down.

Those are my thoughts, my opinions and how I see things.

I don't know that he owed it to Republicans. When he was being courted, he had not announced his political affiliation. If you recall, both parties were in pursuit of him in the late 90's.

Yeah he owed it to the Republicans in my view. I certainly owed it to the black community. The country would be fine under Powell. The country will not be OK under Obama and I see that as disasterous for them and as a result for all Americans.

Of course I believe Hillary would have been disasterous for women and as a woman and the mother and grandmother of girls I'm breathing a sigh of relief on that front.

I think Hillary's done. As bad as it can possibly be under Obama, unless we still have combat troops in Iraq, Hillary can't win the primary against a setting President. And in 2016, she'll be 69. Not quite McCain like but still, that's pretty old.

And I agree, as a black man, Powell should have ran. And as a military man, Powell should have ran. And as an American, Powell. Saying that, how wasn't a life long self proclaimed Republican so I don't think he owend them anything. But that's just me.

I agree. Further, if one runs for president primarily because he or she "owes" it to some political party or other, then I want that person to be as far from the White House as we can keep him or her. Being a loyal partisan and being a loyal American are absolutely conflicting roles.

Well I don't know what to say about that. Perhaps you are both correct, but I'm a Republican and I think of him as "one of us".
