10. Biblical prophecy will be fulfilled.
Why would that be good?

Re: Top Ten Reasons Economic Depression is Good
Wait, won't we all find out?
I thought that didn't just apply to the living. I thought the dead would be resurrected and judged too.
What's the deal, Reverend?

I hope that you both find out why Scriptural prophecy is good. (I didn't mean "I hope you find out" it in a negative sense.)

I hope they find out too, in the positive sense. In the meantime, I think less economic security is probably good for the nation's soul.
The Psalmist was wise when he asked God for neither poverty nor riches. Our national success has been bad for us.

Yes, absolutely.
Too many peopple borrowing too much money to buy too many things they cannot afford is not sustainable.
We do not appreciate the better times as much unless we have lived through some "hard times".

Re: Top Ten Reasons Economic Depression is Good
Dang zig you are starting to sound like a republican.
Saying how hard times builds character and all.
But for me I had enough hard times when Cecil Underwood was governor the first time.
Beans and taters one day and taters and beans the next.
One thing about it though, republican hard times makes a lot of democrats...

Re: Top Ten Reasons Economic Depression is Good
Ziggy,
I agree fully. I hear how horrible a credit crunch would be for the global economy (or already is) and I have to wonder if that in and of itself is a disaster. Whatever happened to only buying those things that you could actually afford?
I bought a 60,000 dollar house in the sticks rather than stay in the city (for a great many reasons other than cash, but still). Do you know why I bought a house so inexpensive? That's what I could afford.
My wife and I share one car. We do this partially for the sake of the earth, but we share an Aveo rather than a hybrid because.....we can afford it.
I can't help but think if more of us lived with less we'd be happier and we'd quickly find that there was plenty to go around. I think we'd also work fewer hours and insist on better jobs without so much stress. Where I disagree with Sherm is that I don't think such a thing would be a function of who is in control of the government, but rather the state of people's hearts and minds in the country.

I've never bought into the idea that overconsumption was good for the country. Do we really need all of those televisions?
Do the wealthy need yachts? They are selling yachts up the river from me (and we are NOT in a wealthy part of the state). They tell me Wall Street needs bailed out. Let them sell their second homes, beach townshares, and SUVs, and then we'll talk about my tax dollars going to rescue them.

Right, like you can't legislate morality and the government can't make you a better person. It isn't their job to try, anyway.

Well Sodbuster, some of my best friends are Republicans. So I am not ashamed.
I don't know that hard times builds character. But it can help build a sense of economic relativity and frugality- which many of us, including Ziggy, could use more of.

Hear hear!, Zig.
Frugality is one of the classic virtues that have been jettisoned by our culture. I agree with Stephanie that the government cannot give us this virtue, except perhaps by screwing up things enough to make it a necessity:)
