Well will the republicans kick the wacko fringe to the curb and let the serious side of the party try to rebuild?

This guy Krugman says no they will shift even further right.

One part of me, as a Democrat, hopes he is right. That would assure future Dem landslides.

But as an American I hope common sense prevails, and we can have two serious choices.

You're quoting a far left liberal and think he speaks for Americans.

You're dreaming Sherm.

See there you go again Aaron.

I never said he speaks for all Americans.

I said that is his opinion.

And I said the partisan side of me hopes he is right, but my "higher angels" lead me the other direction and toward hope that the GOP will come to its senses.

America is basically a consertative country Sherman and the lefts inability to realize that is why Republicans have dominated politics for years and will continue to do so. Like 1992, 2008 is an exception, not the rule.

Here I thought the liberal academics and elites told me that McCain was the "scary option" as he could win and get moderates.

Mitt Romney would be doing much better than McCain.
So would my dog Jericho and my cats.
And the homeless guy up the road who flashes everybody.

I was very partial to another candidate. I thought the field was very weak this year and the whole brand is a little tired. I'm a 57 year old republican and I don't like any of them. And I don't see a lot of up-and-comers. (No, sherm, I don't like anybody on your side, either.)

On the other hand, that McCain is running at 45% is a great testament to him. He was politically deceased a year ago. Very few folks of the incumbent's party have managed to follow a two term incumbent. He's running very well...

It was going to be an uphill climb for whoever the Republicans put up this year. I think it's remarkable that McCain has done as well as he has.

I do think the GOP needs some time in the wilderness to cleanse itself of the corruption and know-nothingness that has gripped the party recently. If Obama wins, the Dems expand their House majority, and get about 55 Senate seats, I'll be fine with that. But if the Dems get a supermajority in the Senate, it won't be the Republicans who get punished, it will be America. A totally unchecked Democratic government led by a pliant Obama could do lasting damage.

Well said, Randall. I think your conclusion is dead on.

Maybe a two to four year "time out" and what the southerners would call a "come to Jesus moment" is exactly what the Republicans need. Provided, that is, that there is some restraining force on the Dems (like the Senate filibuster).

Well let me throw some p--p in the game ok.

I bet it the Dems get 58 or 59 Senators that a couple republicans will see the light and come on over.

I think change is in the air.

And hope... Very Happy

By seeing the light and switching parties?

When the Dems say bipartisanship, they mean Republicans should become Democrats.

No we don't. I would like to see Mitch McConnell win his seat and become the most pissed off, obtrusive, arrogant combative Senator in the history of this country. If he would, I'd move to Kentucky.
