I have no idea what the relationship between Maynard and Blankenship is. It may have been just as he stated, two old friends on vacation in the same part of the world at the same time, hey, let's get together for a drink. It may have been payment for his decision on the law suit. I don't know.
What I do know is the appearance. It doesn't look good and he should have recused himself. In fact, if he's such good friends with Blankenship as it appears, he should recuse himself from every single case involving Massey.
But then so should Larry Starcher who has been openingly critical of Massey and Blankenship.

I just can't get enough of Democrat infighting. If our political discourse were healthy in this country, I'd be sad for us, but given that we're so entrenched in the toilet, l'aissez les bon temps rouler!
