WVa Republicans look to rebound after bad year
by The Associated Press
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia Republicans have not enjoyed much good news in recent years.
Last November was another tough election cycle for the party, with the rival Democrats keeping a firm grip on the Legislature and winning every open statewide office.
But GOP leaders see signs of hope in unexpectedly robust fundraising numbers for January.
The party brought in $19,000 in January, up from an average of about $8,000 a month in 2008. Not bad for a party that in recent memory was mired in debt.
Chairman Doug McKinney says the numbers are a sign that West Virginia Republicans are planning a serious challenge to Democratic dominance here.
