JERUSALEM — Israeli aircraft struck a weapons-manufacturing facility and two smuggling tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip on Thursday, in response to recent rocket attacks on Israel, the military said.

Israel went to war against militants in Hamas-ruled Gaza last winter to quash eight years of rocket and mortar fire that terrorized southern Israel and killed 18 civilians.

More than 1,400 Palestinians were killed in the war, and since it ended on Jan. 18, the attacks have decreased sharply. According to the military's count, 270 rockets and mortars have been fired at Israel since the three-week offensive ended on Jan. 18, compared with more than 3,300 in 2008.

I support Israel and their right to exist, but I do believe that there are times when they are too heavy handed. Self defense is good, but sometimes moderation is good too. Examples would be some of the events which have occurred in the Jenin refugee camp where people were bulldozed in their houses. Though some people question the morality of it, I prefer the targeted approach where terrorists are targeted individually, with care taken to avoiding civilian casualties. That area of the world has consistantly been fought over for millenia. There will never be peace there unless discretion, moderation and reason are key factors in the process.

While your moderate approach is refreshing, I don't think it viable for Israel. If it is to remain the Jewish state, it will have to act immoderately at times. The use of many in that part of the world as human shields forces the matter.

Of course, one could question Israel's policy of automatic "right of return" for Jews into Israel. My cousin, whose father is Jewish, is being flown to Israel for free by the Israeli government. I believe Israel will continue as the Jewish state for religious reasons, but I don't like the UN's existence period, let alone our involvement with it. Let Israel handle its own affairs and I am sure they will be fine, should people in the US wish to support Israel they do well, our government should be concerned, however, with our own problems.

I know that sometimes extremes must be answered with extremes but I don't like it. True human shields are used at times which makes civilian casualties more likely. I personally despise the term "collateral damage". Everyone needs to realize that there are good people fathers, mothers, sons and daughters dying on both sides. Neither Jewish nor Palestinian children ask to be born into a conflict and they die too.

I would also like to see Israel tend more to its own affairs and us to our own.

Well, one thing for sure, when one side kills enough of the other side, ...... the killing will cease.

It seems like it happens like that every time.

It seems Sam that those two parties don't seem to get it though. Considering how long the killing has been going on it appears that it will never end until they have annihilated one another.

Terrible situation that even prayers hasn't been able to resolve. Could the problem be no 'listening ears' on either side? Seems to be an epidemic of that around the world.

The Ohio chapter has a huge billboard on OH Rte 83 calling for the US withdrawal from the UN. I passed it again yesterday on my way home from my MIL's.

The League of Nations didn't have the US and failed miserably. Would to God that the United Nations would go away. I can't believe it is viewed as extremism to believe that our nation's sovereignty should not be tempered by the opinions of foreign governments and their representatives, so very often corrupt, authoritarian, or both, and never accountable to US citizens.
