According to the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank, it is now official: the government employs more than the private sector:

I don't think that means quite what you think it means. The manufacturing sector is now smaller than government, but the services sector is still quite a bit larger, I wager.

Now I share with you your concern that government is way too big, but that's another matter....
