Kentucky senatorial candidate Rand Paul linked the nation's economic problems to the decline of the Roman Empire at a tea party rally.

He said Thursday that in the latter days of the Roman Empire, with the economy in shambles, emperors tried to appease people with food and entertainment to distract them.

Paul says this nation's leaders offered "Cash for Clunkers" and stimulus checks and tell people to shop at malls.

His remarks came the same day his campaign said it has raised more than $1 million in contributions in the past three months.

Quite an astute observation, me thinks. The Gospel by Paul 81632 The Gospel by Paul 81632 The Gospel by Paul 81632

Hiya Sam,

I'd go Weimar Republic rather than the Roman Empire. Pretty much Germany, already broke through the need for reparations as per the Treaty of Versailles, promised her citizens a jobs, insurance and housing in the constitution, and empowered the President with "emergency powers" in case of crisis.

It concerns me that Der Furor, Obamessiah, could declare a state of national emergency on some pretense and suspend the COTUS--and the Republicans would sign on with him because they don't want to be seen as negative..

And it won't change until we change the way political campaigns are financed. As long as spoiled incumbents and freshmen political whores can get virtually unlimited "campaign finance" money from people who are paying to have their agenda prevail, politicians empowered by political principles will be run over by other politicians powered by wagon loads of campaign dollars.

"Campaign finances" are financing more than campaigns.
