The number of companies with paid employees in West Virginia fell from 40,837 in 2004 to just 38,676 in 2010.

The report does not include the state's top employer: the state itself. More than 100,000 people in West Virginia work for the government at one level or another — state, local or federal.

That is eight times the number of people who work at Wal-Mart, the largest private employer in the state.
