Missing: 2,161 businesses that support families

The number of companies with paid employees in West Virginia fell from 40,837 in 2004 to just 38,676 in 2010.

The report does not include the state's top employer: the state itself. More than 100,000 people in West Virginia work for the government at one level or another state, local or federal.

That is eight times the number of people who work at Wal-Mart, the largest private employer in the state.
