BAGHDAD, June 1 (Reuters) -
U.S. troop deaths in Iraq fell to their lowest level last month since the 2003 invasion and officials said on Sunday improved security also helped the country boost oil production in May to a post-war high.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Iraq's oil minister credited better security for the two milestones, which illustrated a dramatic turnabout in the fortunes of a country on the brink of all-out sectarian civil war just 12 months ago.

"We've still got a distance to go but I think lower casualty rates are a reflection of some real progress," Gates told reporters in Singapore. "The key will be to continue to sustain the progress we have seen."

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things.
The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic
feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse.
The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight,
nothing which is more important than his own personal safety,

is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless
made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

Are you saying that a young person of 18 is not mature enough to make a decision to volunteer for military service and sacrifice?

What do you think contributes to such a "decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling" as Mill lamented in the 19th century?

It depends on what you mean by "volunteer". One who is incentivized to "volunteer" by slick propaganda focusing more on alleged "benefits" than on what the reality of "service and sacrifice" means under a crazed Commander-in-Chief such as LB Johnson or GW Bush has not "volunteered" at all- but has been swindled out of his or her good judgment and informed consent.

We require more warning on cigarette advertising than we do on military recruitment advertising, and more truth in advertising for light bulbs than for military recruitment. .

I did not know that he had appeared on Soviet television.

He's another liberal with an agenda and I'm quite confident that you would have fit in nicely on Soviet television in the early 80's Frank.

So what do you know of recruiting for you to make the accusations you did?

I see life sized cardboard recruiting cutouts in malls, I see smiling faces of bodies dressed in military uniforms on billboards and other advertisemnets- all with the written or spoken message words telling readers and listeners that their National Guard or Marine or Army or Navy or Air Force opportuinty is too good to resist- that it can bring them money, adventure, educational opportunities, etc. But no where does it say anything like, "Warning, if we send your ass to Iraq or Vietnam on a Presidential whim backed up by untruths and propped up in the American psyche by politically motivated hysteria about how patriotic are the war supporters and how treasonous are the skeptices , you might never return alive".

So you know nothing other then your what your anti-war core thinking tells you, which isn't much.

It does bring them money. Current enlistment bonus money can be as much as $40K.

I toured Europe on Uncle Sam's dollar, which was pretty adventourous.

There is educational opportunties. Currenty the GI bill is paying something like $40k to $60k for college.

And I don't think there's anyone who joins that don't realize that if they are sent to a combat environment, the stand a chance to lose their life.

Perhaps your judgement is clouded by your anti war mentality Frank?

My brother-in-law "toured" Asia 1966-1968. And his mind is still messed up over it. My sister-in-law's brother "toured" Asia in 1965. His name is on what they call "The Wall" in Washington DC.

Perhaps your judgement is clouded by your anti war mentality Frank

Our judgments are all- including yours- "clouded" by our life experiences.

My "anti-war mentality" is no more "clouded" than your pro-war mentality is clouded.

What do 18 year old college students know, other then what the slick advertisements and some admissions clerk looking to meet quota tells them?

If a kid joins, then in your anti-war mind, they had to have been duped.

I'll stand by my earlier statement Frank.

I also had a B-I-L tour Asia in 70/71. Other then being an ass, which he was before he left, he's perfectly normal. I personally served with dozens that tourned Asia for numerous tours and they were all normal.

I honor your S-I-L's brother along wth all his brothers on the wall he shares. They guranteed our freedom and I honor their service and their sacrifice.

HELLS BELLS, there was/is a lot of people who never toured Europe or Asia in 1966, 1976, 1986, 1996 or 2006 or even anywhere outside WV ......

"And their mind is still messed up".

From what my friend told me, the "biggest cause of problems" suffered/suffering by those who toured the Far East in the 60's and 70's was the "price" of drugs, booze and sex ........ which if not "free" ..... was readily available @ close to one (1) American dollar ($1) each, for all you wanted, anytime you wanted it.

And most madams offered a "money back guarantee" if not "satisfied" or "relieved" via their girl's "services". cheers cheers cheers

GEEEZE, almost every week, any week, ya can hear/read about someone associated with the "rock star culture" ........... having a "messed up mind" as a result of drugs, booze and sex ...... and they achieved that status right here in the US of A.
