Are the ChiComm gymnast girls at least 16 years old?

I have an 8-year-old daughter. I know what 8-year-old hands and feet and hips and teeth look like. They look a lot like the hands and feet and hips and teeth of the purported "teenagers" on the gold medal-winning Chinese girls' gymnastics team.

The two pounds of frosty blue eye shadow and Bubblicious pink blush that the ChiComs piled on the cherubic faces of their gymnasts backfired. Rather than masking their youth, the pedo-friendly makeup made them look even younger, like 5-year-olds dressed up for a Beijing Halloween Gone Wild.

One of the Chinese team members has an unexplained missing tooth -- explicable if someone knocked it out, or if she's the only "16"-year-old on the planet still losing her Chiclet-sized baby teeth. Take your pick. The coaches refused to elaborate on the gap. (They're in deeper denial about cheating than John Edwards.)

Maybe the ChiComms are counting by dog years??

I don't know what the Chinese ages are. I do know the Karolyis', who oversee America's team, aren't concerned the Chinese are using sub-16 years olds. They're peaved that they can't get by with using little girls. It was the Karolyis' who coached Nadia Comaneci to gold at the age of 14 in the 70's before comeing to American and coaching Mary Lou Retton to gold at 14 and Kerri Strug to gold at 14 as well.

I think that any girl that can cut the olympic mustard should be allowed to compete--but, the rules say 16. Rules are rules, aren't they?

Well, it is not just sour glapes--the USA would have probably come in second anyway. What am I going to do about it? Well, I am going to boycott tofu over it-- for one thing!

I'll back you up Terry. I say no TOFU for anyone. And add rice too. We shouldn't eat rice either, not until the Chinese send 16 year olds or America is allowed to exploit 12 year olds.

Foe everyone else it has been 16 years old except for ChiComms, Democrats and other socialists.

They changed the age requirement because women gymnast were in truth little girls. For some reason, the IOC became outraged and changed the age requirement to 16.

I don't think they've helped the kids one bit. Now instead of working 12 hour days until they're 14 or 15 or 16 they're working 12 hour days until they're 16 or 17 or 18.

If the IOC wanted to help the children, they'ed ban participation by children who are plucked out of nursery schools and day cares and whisked away from their parents to train for a dozen years to sports boot camps from the tender age of 3. My $.02.

Well Steph what if their parents are fully cooperative and the ones pushing it.

Katie participated in gymnastics for 7 years. The girls that did well loved the sport. They lived for gymnastics, whether their parents wanted them to or not. The children who were doing it for their parents instead of themselves just weren't as successful as the girls who competed because they love the sport.

Remember, no matter how aggressive a parent in the USA may be, the child isn't sent off to a boot camp where life is entirely gymnastics 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. The child still has other contacts and experiences, the same isn't true in China. Those little girls don't know anything but what the people training them to be gymnists tell them.

I don't think you understand Sherm. In China, the communist/socialist government which dictates everything from the economy to healthcare also controls the sports as well. Athlete's who are identified as potential Olympics and professionals are pulled from their homes WITHOUT the parents consent and put into academies where all they do is train. Every community in China has government employees looking for these kids and once they are identified, the government owns them.

Yao Ming was identified at birth due to genetics and was basically a child of the central government.

Anyone with functioning eyes can see the Chinese girls are under 16. But the real outrage of these Olympics is the judges of the ladies gymnastics events. The Chinese girls could fall flat on their butts and have fewer points deducted than the Americans. We know the judges have been bribed before; the Russians have been doing it for years, if not decades. I call shenanigans.

I'm on dial-up, same as you. I know it is true they take girls as young as 3 from their parents. I've been a fan of "women's" gymnastics since I was a little girl and watched girls like Olga Corbut and Nadia Comaneche back in the 70's. I've been viewing internation gymnastic competitions for decades.

The broadcasters talk about the Chinese training camps all the time. This has been going on for years. The government selects little girls as young as 3, takes them away from their parents and gymnastics is all they know. I'm not talking about a few dozen girls, I'm talking thousands each and every year.

They don't see their families. On average, they see their parents once a year. They have not only put the cable in the ground in front of my house, but in the past few days they put this big metal locker looking thing on top of that concrete slab that had all those cables poking up out of the ground in the middle of it. I'll have DSL soon and I'll look for more information on it for you, but I may need reminding.

Do you mean the uneven bars? That's what I saw last night. It is frustrating, and it appeared as though Nastia's dad wanted a protest filed. I'm pretty sure beam is tonight.

You are right, it was the uneven bars. And Liukin was ripped off. It was sad but then it seems that as far back as I can remember watching Olympics, there has always been some sort of controversy in scoring. So much so that they changed it and now a gymnast can't get a perfect 10, which I don't agree with either.

Comaneci and Mary Lou will always be remembered for their perfect 10's. But who’s going to remember Shawna Johnson’s 16.225 even though it does take the gold on tonight’s beam?

I don't know, Aaron. There were a lot of things about gymanstics I really loved when Katie participated. It was great exercise and required a lot of discipline, which I liked. However, as she got older and it became more and more competitive it became obvious that it was just going to be all-consuming and so when she said she'd had enough, I didn't say too much. I asked her if she was sure, but didn't push it.

At least the American kids have their families looking out for them and the coaches aren't working for the all-powerful government.

As far as who will remember Nastia and Shawn, there are some gymnists the fans never forget, even if the don't win all the medals and score the perfect 10's. They just have something about them. Do you remember the little girl Bella Karolyi coached a few years ago? It's killing me I can't remember her name. She was barely 14 when she appeared in the Olympics and she charmed the world. Why can't I think of her name? I want to say her parents were Romanian..dark hair, dark eyes, tiny little thing. It will come to me. I'll never forget watching her perform the floor exercises. That kid was really something.

Darn, what is her name? lol Mochianeau or something like that. I wonder what became of that kid. My son had a major crush on her back then and purchased her autobiography. lol
