Some Rep's buck mob mentality...
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14191.html
Well there seems to be almost a mob mentality amongst the most adamant opponents to Pres. Bush's rescue plan for the financial services industry.
So no matter which side you are on you have to give these guys credit for, in their minds at least, doing what's right instead of what's expedient.
Time will tell if they pay a price at the polls.
However if the House eventually passes it as expected, this issue could become moot.

Again, time will tell.

Re: Some Rep's buck mob mentality...
Polls have shown that as much as 80% of the people are AGAINST this bailout. Why wouldn't Representatives worry about answering to their constituents?
Yet you imply the only reason house members are opposed is to save their jobs. Do you think the government knows best and should RAM this vote down our throats when 80% of Americans are against the bill?
And you can't say they aren't aware of the consequences because every news organization out there is predicting doomsday scenario’s if the bill fails, yet Americans still oppose it.

"Yet you imply the only reason house members are opposed is to save their jobs."
Perhaps you inferred that.
I figure some fall into the category you suggest but there are probably some who believe they are right but it is hard to say with certainty why people do what they do.
But I think you would agree that most of the public who are opposed really know precious little about it.
They are being stirred up by rabble rousers and demagogues.
I have posted elsewhere I know precious little about it.
But people who probably are even less knowledgeable than I am are getting on their hi-horse.
You may already know, but the rightwing wackos are not the only ones opposed.
I get stuff from leftwing outfits that are also vociferously opposed.
And just as accusatory and vocal.
I got one this morning from Cindy Sheehan that sounds just like some of Stephanie's postings.
Most of the proponents seem less vociferous and more reasoned in their approach.
That does not mean they are right.
But they seem to be more reasonable.
Again, just my opinion.

Re: Some Rep's buck mob mentality...
I would disagree with you Sherm in that most who are opposed are ignorant of the economics of this country. I believe there are some that are, but for the most part, I believe many have done what I and others have done, and that's educate ourselves on the subject.
The more I study this and learn, the more opposed I am. There are alternatives that start with eliminating the mark to market rule (which is being done from what I heard on GMA this morning) to having the government taking over distressed banks, investment firms and subjecting them to strict FDIC rules which include bank examiners and FDIC regulations.
I have either heard or read at least 10 top economist say that the financial situation in the 80's was much worse then the current situation is and had the accounting rules been in place then, the top 10 banks would have failed within a week.
There's a reason Paulson and the leadership wanted this rammed through as fast as they did. The more Americans learn, the more they learn this plan is not needed and is a bad plan for 'main street' regardless of what the media is telling you.
The one person I've been most impressed with regarding the crisis is Marcy Kaptur. I think you would like her if you do a little reading and watch some of her interviews.

Well I have never heard of Mary Kaptur.
I will look her up.
Is she a news reporter?

Re: Some Rep's buck mob mentality...
I provided a link to her wiki page Sherm. She's a democratic congresswoman from Ohio's 9th congressional district which encompasses Toledo.
I cagree with her on this particular issue and as I said, I think you’ll like her.

Well she seems like a nice lady and I agree with her on the WWII memorial.
Do you know how she is gonna vote on the bailout?

Re: Some Rep's buck mob mentality...
She said this morning she would vote against it again and was immediately shut down by Cuomo during the interview when she attempted to explain what she thinks needs to be done.
They shut her down because when she was on Tuesday’s show and ask if she was willing to accept the shutdown of the economy because of her no vote, she explained what needed to be done then and Chris Cuomo attempted to put her in her place. What she did was point out that his “anxiety” along with other reporters wasn’t doing anyone any good, but in fact making things worse and it was her that put him in his place.
If you look at her wiki page, she believes the media is part of the attempt to ram Paulson’s plan through, they have an agenda and as a result, are reporting very little opposition to the Paulson plan and is magnifying the doomsday scenario. I agree with her.

Well I also noticed she has a propensity to either get confused or shoot from the hip sometimes.
So are you predicting it will fail?

Re: Some Rep's buck mob mentality...
No, I think it will pass in spite of the wise words and warnings of Congresswoman Kapture and I think that is part of the problem.
Even when we do elect good people to Washington, we don't listen to them. Instead we follow the doom and gloom the media puts out and do what they want us to do.

Re: Some Rep's buck mob mentality...
I think I could support the bailout if they would provide some protection for the toy wooden arrow industry. Does anybody else find it odd who is supporting "Pres. Bush" in this abortion?

No I don't Jimmy and I've tried to point that out by quoting what appears to be a fairly liberal member of the democratic party.

Re: Some Rep's buck mob mentality...
Only if it's changed to defeat this monstrosity and what would change it is some common sense. Saying that, I have no doubt the Senate added enough pork to purchase at least 12 votes, most likely from the Democratic Party. The question is, did they turn any Republican house members who previously the bill against it in doing so.

I just can't believe how Nan & Harry & Co. are clamoring to support anything deemed urgent by the anti-Christ himself.

Re: Some Rep's buck mob mentality...
I'm not a big O'Reilly guy but did you see him bitch slap Barney Frank?
http://www.foxnews.com/oreilly/
He was screaming at him - called him a "coward" and told him to "cut the crap". He'd played tape of Frank saying Fannie Mae was financially sound and that as a result people had lost millions of dollars. When Frank denied it, despite having seen himself say it, O'Reilly went ballistic. It was good stuff.

Well I can't get the link to work OC but Oreilly has been pontificating for days about what he would do to Frank if he could get him on.

Re: Some Rep's buck mob mentality...
I think he went ballistic pretty quick Jimmy and as Sherm pointed out, it was like pre-mediated and I think his goal was to embarrass Frank. Considering the ass O'Reilly is, I think Frank, who I have no love for, held his own until it turned into a name calling session.
What I would have liked to have seen was Frank answer hard questions and made to own up to his and his parties actions over the last two years of their control.
Instead O'Reilly turned it into a Jerry session. I’m really not a fan of his.

Remember that old line from a song or whatever:
Scared of living ....... and afraid of dying.
Well, all those politicians are .....
Scared to vote for the bailout
and afraid to vote against the bailout.
and afraid to vote against the bailout.
