Eric Holder Could Be Obama's Top Justice Pick
by Juan Williams and Renee Montagne
Morning Edition, November 19, 2008 · President-elect Barack Obama's top choice for U.S. attorney general seems to be Eric Holder. Holder was the No. 2 official in the Justice Department under President Bill Clinton. The Obama team says no final decision has been made.source

Re: Attorney General
And this is Obama's pick.
Makes you go HMMMMMM.
And if the new AG was on the team that re-authorized the Patriot Act, how is it JUST Bush's fault?
And of course there is his role in the Mark Rich pardon.
Makes you go HMMMMMM.
Quick! Name the veteran Department of Justice insider who, shortly after the USA Patriot Act was signed into law and at a point when the Bush administration was proposing to further erode barriers to governmental abuses, argued that dissenters should not be tolerated?
Who invoked September 11, explicitly referencing "the World Trade Center aflame," in calling for the firing of any "petty bureaucrat" who might suggest that proper procedures be followed and that the separation of powers be respected?
John Ashcroft? No.
Alberto Gonzales? No.
It was Eric Holder, the man who has reportedly been selected by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as the next Attorney General of the United States.
Appearing on CNN in June, 2002, the former Clinton administration Justice Department aide sounded as if he had just stepped out of the Bush camp: "We're dealing with a different world now. Everybody should remember those pictures that we saw on September the 11th. The World Trade Centers aflame, the pictures of the Pentagon, and any time some petty bureaucrat decides that his or her little piece of turf is being invaded, get rid of that person. Those are the kinds of things we have to do."
If that's unsettling, consider the fact that Holder was part of the legal team that in 2005 developed strategies for securing re-authorization of the Patriot Act.

And of course there is his role in the Mark Rich pardon.
On the last day of Clinton's term, Holder told the White House he was "neutral, leaning toward favorable" for a presidential pardon for Marc Rich, a wealthy commodities dealer who had spent years running from tax charges. Rich's ex-wife, Denise, was a prominent Democratic Party donor.
It turned out to be a bad call. The pardon provoked howls of protests and a congressional investigation over whether it was politically motivated. Holder later publicly apologized for what he called a snap decision and said he would have advised against it had he paid more attention to the case.

Here is one version of how the Rich Pardon went down.
Aaron I am surprised you would object to it.
Do you realize how much heartache and anguish he caused the Steelworkers here in Ravenswood when they tried to bust the Union?
Rich was almost as notorious around here as Emmett Boyle.
However you slice it, the Rich pardon was probably the low point of Clinton's regime.
A lot of money changed hands in that sorry episode, as well as Denise no doubt charming the pants off of Bill.
I doubt Holder's opinion carried much weight one way or the other.
But insofar as he influenced the decision I hereby condemn his actions.
And he would not be my choice for AG.
I would have much rather seen Darrell McGraw.
If McGraw was appointed, I bet a bunch of the crooks on Wall St. would be jumping out the windows about now.

Re: Attorney General
Well it looks like my recommendation for Homeland Security won't get it either.
Looks like Janet Napolitano is the choice.
She should be pretty good.
I remember she was real critical of the current Director (the one who looks like Dr. Kevorkian) and the way he failed to implement border security.

Re: Attorney General
Also my problem with Holder (or even Rich) has nothing to do with their being Jewish.
I am a supporter of Israel and the Jewish homeland.

Re: Attorney General
Nope! I didn't because the Rich pardon is the least of my concerns with Holder at the moment. Of far graver concern is his willingness to just trample our civil liberties and wipe his hind end with our Constitution.
It's just not getting any discussion.

Re: Attorney General
Frankly Sherman, I don't much care about the Rich pardon and I don't necessary think it was the "low point" of the Clinton administration. The constitution gives the President free reign to pardon anyone he wants, for any reason with no restrictions or no congressional oversight.
I would say him lying on national TV and obstructing justice are the low points of his administration.
The one thing about Holder that you completely ignored was his role in the renewal of the Patriot Act. You know the law that is going to allow Joe Lieberman to intrude into your life?
Why no comments on any of that?

Re: Attorney General
I have commented more than anyone on this forum against the Patriot Act and the Homeland Security Dept.
I was commenting against those before you ever appeared on the old forum.

Re: Attorney General
Does that make your opposition to them greater then mine or others?
And you still haven't commented on Holders role either?

Re: Attorney General
I want to know how Holder as AG is good for Old Glory? Really, is this the best Obama can do?
Re: Attorney General
Well I told you I do not approve of Holder as AG.
But unlike some I dont oppose him because he is Jewish.
I just dont think he was very conscientious in checking out Mark Rich.
