Century Aluminum employees warned plant may close
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- More than 650 employees at Century Aluminum of West Virginia in Ravenswood were today warned the plant could shut down within 60 days if aluminum prices don't stabilize and the company can't reduce costs.

Re: Century Aluminum employees warned plant may close
It's time to bailout the Aluminum industry. Congress must take action now. We can not afford to lose this manufacturing capability as it is vital to our national defense. I propose $50 billion immediately with more to come once the aluminum companies run through that money.
Ravenswood Mayor Lucy Harbert said a total shutdown of the plant "would devastate the whole county."
"It's never good news, and it's especially bad right before Christmas," she said.
The plant employs not only Ravenswood residents, but also people from Parkersburg, Spencer and Charleston, the mayor said.
"The trickle-down effect that it will have will be devastating in this community," she said.
Harbert said she would be making phone calls today to various officials, from Jackson County commissioners to U.S. senators.
"I'm hoping that maybe if they bail out people with millions of dollars, maybe someone will bail out us here," she said.

Well you can make light of it if you want, but this is serious bad news.
And no doubt much more to come.

So what should be done to bring up the price of aluminum, government intervention? That is what you get when you bail out one industry as Bush, Paulson and the Dems did when they started the bank bailouts.
The first thing they have to do is control their own cost and do all they can to withstand the downturn. The price will come back up once the demand does.
The price of aluminum has fallen from just over $3,200 per metric ton in July to about $1,400 today, Dildine said.
The first thing they have to do is control their own cost and do all they can to withstand the downturn. The price will come back up once the demand does.
"What we can control is our own cost structure," Dildine said. "We're going to be addressing that very aggressively... We're going to invest every possible means to address the cost structure so we can hopefully keep the plant open in Ravenswood."

Why shouldn't the little aluminum company in Ravenswood, WV get a bailout?
Seems everyone else is. Even those wealthy socialites foolish enough to put all their eggs in Madoff's basket.

Well the biggest single cost in the process is for electricity.
The PSC regulates the price of electricity for residential customers.

Not with Century, the PSC doesn't. AEP negotiates directly with Century based on the price of Aluminum and right now Century has some of the best rates in the country.

Yes I know they don't. At one time they talked about building their own power plant.
btw did you know Ohio Power supplies the plant?

All I know is AEP is the parent company and according to them in an article on Thursday I believe, they indicated that while they will certainly work with Century, they are already giving them rock bottom rates.

"According to them...."
Well Aaron as you probably know, a lot of smoke gets blown sometimes.
"Representatives of American Electric Power have also been invited, Turner said, because Century's other big problem is the cost of electricity to run its production lines.
... American Electric Power's West Virginia subsidiaries recently received an 11.35 percent increase from the state Public Service Commission. Meanwhile, Allegheny Energy has a tentative agreement for a 15 percent rate increase in the state....

Re: Century Aluminum employees warned plant may close
Perhaps the PSC passed that legislation because AEP gave another discount to Century.
I doubt that's the reason for the increase. Regardless, Century is not going to pay the 11% increase.
As for the rest of the article, it's just another case of government intervention into private business. So why should the rest of West Virginia tax payers subsidize those 650 jobs in Ravenswood?
Electricity rates have been rising in West Virginia, but remain low compared to other states. In June, the state's Public Service Commission approved an 11 percent increase for Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power to cover rising fuel costs and capital improvements.
Appalachian Power spokeswoman Jeri Matheney said Thursday the utility has been working with Century, but wouldn't comment on what specific arrangements they're discussing.
"It's important to keep in mind that they have one of the lowest rates in the country," Matheney said. "It's simply that they use enormous amounts of it.... They couldn't get a better rate working anywhere else in the country."
If Century gets a big discount from Appalachian Power, the utility could ask for a rate increase from other customers, said Byron Harris, director of the Consumer Advocate Division at the PSC.
