Unprecedented snow in Las Vegas has some scratching their heads – how can there be global warming with this unusual winter weather?
CNN Meteorologist Chad Myers had never bought into the notion that man can alter the climate and the Vegas snowstorm didn’t impact his opinion. Myers, an American Meteorological Society certified meteorologist, explained on CNN’s Dec. 18 “Lou Dobbs Tonight” that the whole idea is arrogant and mankind was in danger of dying from other natural events more so than global warming.
“You know, to think that we could affect weather all that much is pretty arrogant,” Myers said. “Mother Nature is so big, the world is so big, the oceans are so big – I think we’re going to die from a lack of fresh water or we’re going to die from ocean acidification before we die from global warming, for sure.”
Myers is the second CNN meteorologist to challenge the global warming conventions common in the media. He also said trying to determine patterns occurring in the climate would be difficult based on such a short span.

Well Keli don't go giving me too much credit.
I just go with what the big majority of scientists say.
Like the Sheik said, the majority of scientists are not always right.
But most of the time I figure they are.
Their conclusions are a lot more credible to me than anecdotal stories about how the winters seem colder than they used to be, or it snowed in Las Vegas, etc.

Sure, Sherm. It snowing in Las Vegas is not proof of anything. The coldest year in a decade is not proof of anything, either. Carefully manipulated studies, however, which dismiss alternatives without explaining just why those alternatives were dismissed, with funding prizes to the ones that get the "correct" answer, are to be questioned.
You'll have to forgive me, Sherm, but when a scientist is quick to say that every rational person will from here on will agree with him I immediately suspect that what he is doing is spreading propaganda and not inquiry. The Times UK article I just suffered through had a scientist doing just that.
There are a number of propositions that I see in all of this global warming drama.
1-The earth is warming. (I don't think anyone doubts this)
2-Global warming is necessarily bad. (I find it incredible the silence on the question of who global warming might possibly help. Any suggestions are quickly dismissed as "they'll get theirs eventually")
3-Man is the cause of this necessarily bad global warming (I can dig it, and I live my life acordingly. We use cloth diapers, keep our house at 66 degrees--a true feat in Northern Illinois), and share a small car. The intolerance of the "true believers," however, makes me weary).
4-If we act "fast enough," we can do something about it (but I never see any good data telling exactly what we need to do and how to absorb the impacts of getting there.)
I like Obama's plan to spend money on wind and solar energy projects. I would also like to see such projects held accountable for producing actual results, but I won't hold my breath. I do think we should look seriously into reducing both our carbon footprint and our dependency on oil from sources that are hostile to our interests. I also think that we should not insult very smart people who happen to think that the dominant paradigm is off base. If global warming is so overwhelmingly obvious, then it should not hurt anyone to provide more proof as to why.

Hi Keli,
I noticed at the end of the article someone else had questioned the orthodoxy and was forced to recant the next day.
Good heavens these schmucks sure do know how to hold an Inquisition!

Well Sheik that statement is fair enough.
But do you think the folks bankrolling the anti-global warming campaign have clean hands?
I say the more study the better.

Las Vegas gets record snowfall, 3.6 inches
By ROBERT JABLON – 22 hours ago
"Snow is not unknown in the Las Vegas valley. On average we get 1/2 inch of snow a year," Jacques said. "But this amount made it a significant storm. We haven't had this amount of snow since 1979."

You mean the Nobel peace prize that went to Al Gore is suspect?
Funny, as just a couple days ago one of our most prolific posters here said that the Nobel peace prize committee had exhonerated Henry Kessinger of charges of terrorism by awarding him some prize or other. So old Henry, too, must have known the "correct" answer.
Now either that prize committee knows its stuff, or it doesn't.
Or can we really have it both ways?

The "picture" may be authentic, but it is the caption under you picture that I doubt to be "authentic" or accurate. And that would make your post a misrepresentation.
I showed a source for my information about record snowfall in Las Vegas.
Can you show us the source for your photograph and caption?

It's not up to me to prove myself right, you prove me wrong.
Isn't that the tone you take!!!
Go ahead, prove me wrong.
It shouldn't be that difficult with all the information given on the picture so have at it.
And for the record, the 16-18 inches of snow IS NOT the record for snowfall in Las Vegas. In March, 2005 they had 22", which ranks 4th all time.

Sherman, I wish you would quit being so gullible.
Do you have any frigging idea at all ...... how many scientists there are in the world?
Well now, one has to know that before they can determine what a "majority"
is.
A little clue Sherman, .... it is in the millions.
Our Federal government probably employees more than 30,000.

No, we can't. And you'll note that I have said nothing about Kissinger, and it makes no difference to me what the Nobel Prize committee has to say about him, or Al Gore, for that matter.

No, not really Sod. I tried to post the picture Keli posted but it wouldn't let me for some reason so I went to the next one. I didn't notice the depth of the snow until after I posted it and then I started doing some research and found out my picture was of LV, NM.
Before I could correct it, Ziggy has accused me of dishonesty. It wasn't. I posted a picture of snow in Las Vegas, which was mentioned in a previous post.

You are trying to misrepresent what I said again. I said that it was suspect.
But now that you mention it, in the context of this thread of posts, and of the news about yesterday's snowfall, it IS dishonest- especially if you don't edit it with a full disclaimer.

No it wasn't dishonest. What it did was show how obsessed you are at proving me wrong, so much so that you didn't do due diligence and find the truth yourself.
And on top of that, after I told you it was genuine, you continued to insist it wasn't and made an arse of yourself.
Sam came up with another picture and you could have done the same had you goggled what was on the picture. It's so easy a 5th grader could do it were they not otherwise obsessed.
