Paterson's Senate pick
Hi y'all,
I was wondering, inspired by an OC post, what you all think of Paterson's choice for Hillary's replacement? I wonder if his choice of a moderate leaves the position more accessible for himself when it comes up for a vote.

My first reaction was that I would oppose any appointment made by the Governor; however, I think that all things considered, he made a good choice.

Re: Paterson's Senate pick
I dont see this lady as a care-taker Senator.
More likely scenario is she can campaign for his re-election upstate.
Where he needs help.
But if the Kennedys run someone against him it will be interesting.
His nomination of her upset a lot of city folks.

City folks. I'm rolling that around on my tongue a little.
Paterson worked for David Dinkins. He is city folks.
At the same time, his naming Gillebrand was self-serving since he felt he needed help in her Congressional District. Whether she campaigns for him or he benefits from simply having nominated her, he did it for himself.
Also, remember, Paterson was minority leader in the state Senate. We typically think of NY as blue. And maybe it is but the democrats don't even hold a majority in the state Senate. Paterson is more worried about up-state than he is NYC.

Re: Paterson's Senate pick
Well I saw an interview with a NYC State senator (or was she a Congresslady?) and she was livid.

There were two ways he could have handled it: 1) make up an excuse why she could not serve or 2) tell the truth. I think he did the more humane.

Re: Paterson's Senate pick
I'm relieved. I didn't think he would appoint Caroline because she I think even most Democrats realize DNA doesn't qualify a person for a seat in the US Senate. I did fear he would seat Cuomo and that may have brought on a stroke for me.
