War the greatest danger to liberty
"If tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy. Of all the enemies to public liberty, war is perhaps the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. The loss of liberty at home is to be charged to the provisions against danger, real or imagined, from abroad."
-- James Madison
Did Madison hit the nail on the head or what? Maybe we ought to listen to what our founders and the framers of the US Constiutiton had to say. Seems they knew abit more than many give them credit for.

Re: War the greatest danger to liberty
They said Congress had very limited powers and entitlement programs wasn't listed in any of those powers. If were going to listen to them, shouldn't we listen to everything they had to say?

Re: War the greatest danger to liberty
Geesh, Aaron, you have to make up my mind.
Please forgive me if I've been misunderstanding your previous posts but you have lead me to believe that you think that some of these entitlements are Constitutional because they provide for the "general welfare". Have I been misunderstanding you all of this time?

As usual Steph, I have no idea what you're talking about here?
If you believe I'm in favor of entitlement programs then yes, you are incorrect. NO entitlement program is constitutional.

Re: War the greatest danger to liberty
OK, you're opposed to all entitlement programs. I'll remember that.
Re: War the greatest danger to liberty
Yes I am, including Social Security and Medicare.
That doesn't mean I'm stupid enough to believe they're going away, nor would it be prudant to just do away with them but that doesn't make them constitutional.
What I would like to see and what I believe needs to happen for this country to be truely great is to do away gradually with all entitlement programs. With SS, that means complete privatization. Return the 15% of the pay to the employee and let him invest it as he sees fit. Pick an age or a time and stop enrolling individuals into SS.
I'd be happy if they gave me all the money I've put into the program back and let me invest that as I see fit.

Aaron offered some really good arguements as to why entitlements were not constitutional on the other forum, Steph.

Re: War the greatest danger to liberty
Cato,
I don't "get" Aaron. I seldom understand him so in general I have given up trying. I'm sure that's terrible but I'm OK with it and he probably couldn't care less.

I don't know what's so difficult Steph. I'm pretty straight forward. And you'd be right, I'm one of those that just don't care what others think.
