Good news for WV Public Schools
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- If history is any indicator, about a third of West Virginia students who finish high school this spring will have to take a remedial class in college.
Data from the state Higher Education Policy Commission show that last fall, 5,700 state high school graduates were enrolled in developmental courses at state colleges. The courses are designed for students who are considered unprepared for normal college subjects, mostly English and math.
Most of those students were taking classes at the state's two-year community colleges, which have open enrollment. But at least 2,100 had been accepted at four-year colleges, even though their college entrance scores showed deficiencies in college-level material.
It also found that 43 percent of all students at two-year colleges and 29 percent of students at four-year universities have enrolled in remedial courses.
In West Virginia, 8,446 college students, including those from here and from other states, took a remedial class in fall 2008, according to the higher education commission.

I really didn't like the "tone" of that news article because it appeared to me to be badmouthing our School System.
I think all of those remedial courses needing students is actually a blessing in disguise ........ given the extreme shortage of Teachers in West Virginia.
What seems to be escaping everyone's thinking is the fact that bunches of said remedial needing students will earn their AB Degree in Education and in 3 or 4 years they will be available to be hired as Teachers in the local Schools to replace all the retiring teachers, etc.
And that is good, ..... whenever qualified retiring Teachers are being replaced with equally qualified Teachers that were taught by said retirees.
Life is good in West Virginia.
