IOU
In my quest to become the latest poster in most every category here (I'm broke and bored, a bad combo!) I notice that no one has posted to California in while.
Given that the state is in the midst of an absolute disaster, shouldn't California be more of a "warning" than a "model" to the rest of us?

Re: IOU
There is a movement for a proposition in California that would end all cash assistance, housing, and medical assistance to illegal immigrants and their children. Do you think they're fed up enough to pass it?

Yes, and I would be also, especially, if I was a contractor or taxpayer that has just received and IOU in the mail for money the State owed me. Talk about the ultimate double standard. See what happens if you are short of cash and you send the state an IOU.

Re: IOU
This corner of the forum was created for SFCraig, a pleasant enough fellow from San Francisco who felt unwelcome here due to our near-monolithic republican tilt. I regret that.
Nevertheless I wondered about California's position as the most sought-after state. That is, would most Americans secretly yearn to live in California even now?
I went to U-Haul, which informed me that they figured rates to and from locations based on, well:
What are the rates for a 26 foot truck from San Francisco to Austin, TX?
What are the rates for a 26 foot truck from Austin, TX to San Francisco?
From SF, CA: $941
From Austin: $2134
Texas offers 70% of all new jobs created in the United States. The reason for their success: lower taxes and more balanced and predictable regulation.

Why does it cost less to move from Point A to Point B than vice versa? Many variables go into establishing rates. There are times when more people are moving out of a city than into it. Because we want more equipment going back to that city we will often discount the rate.

Re: IOU
Well all I have to offer is anecdotal.
I have a son who does construction work in San Francisco. The bottom fell out back last fall.
The company he works for went from around 15 employees down to four.
Him and three Mexicans.
He thinks the main reason they kept him is he is able to communicate with them and keep the jobs moving.
But the past few weeks things have started to improve and they are hiring people and even having to turn some jobs down.

I am glad things are working out for your son.
How do you feel about Obama making California out of the rest of us?

Re: IOU
Well I am not all that opposed to some of the things California does but all in all I like it here and want to stay.
However if you are fishing for an Obama criticism from a democrat I can oblige.
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/galloway/story/71917.html
I say do what's necessary to bring justice to those responsible for 9-11.
But the military occupation of Afghanistan will not accomplish that.
It is a bad idea.
If anything, it will make these outlaws into folk heroes.
Best way to put a stop to this is for a progressive democrat to dip their toe in and start testing the Presidential waters.

Re: IOU
Well Aaron I don't really know if military adventurism is "left" or "right."
It certainly is not Democrat or Republican, far as I can see.
I think as much as possible we should keep our military home and mind our own business.
In the case of bin Laden and his gang I say go after them and root them out.
But dont get into a long term occupation.

History doesn't bear you out on that. Save for Iraq, which Bush had a plan for ending when he left office, and Desert Storm, which Bush 1 had a clear cut objective, achieved them and came home, it has been a Democrat that has taken us to war EVERY other time.
WW1-Woodrow Wilson
WW2-FDR
Vietnam and Korea-Truman
Continuation and escalation of Vietnam-Kennedy and then Nixon.

I agree. We should keep out military home. And if we were ever serious about getting Bin Laden, instead of occupying Afghanistan, we would do as Ron Paul suggested and issue Letters of Marquis and Reprisal or put the secret CIA program into operation which would have rooted out terrorist from all over the world and assassinated them on the spot.
We would be much more likely getting Bin Laden with small special forces units supported by off sea ship and air support then we are in sending hundreds of thousands of troops into a country that has already bankrupted and brought down one superpower.

Re: IOU
Obama lied, face it. The liberals in Congress keep giving him the money. All that hullabaloo over "Booosh" and Obama draws Pakistan into the fray. Nearly all of them suck ass.
Re: IOU
Obama's worse then Bush. In addition to be a nation building, war mongering liar, he's going to bankrupt us this country with is socialist programs.

Re: IOU
I wish to hell that people would quit making comments and excuses concerning Bin Laden, ...... him dead and buried somewhere.
I told you before that when his propaganda comrades made and released the last video tape of Bin Laden strolling around outside somewhere in Afghan or Pakistan that the CIA used their topographical manipulating computer program with its huge data base to pinpoint exactly where that video was taken and acted upon said accordingly.
It would be no different than if someone took a picture with a digital camera of a house, building, etc. in any mapped city/town in the US and sent it to Google Roads n Streets or whatever it is called and asked Google to tell them where it was taken. They would just have to search their data base for a match to said digital image and BINGO.
