WASHINGTON - President Obama is leaning hard on the nation's schools, using the promise of more than $4 billion in federal aid — and the threat of withholding it — to strong-arm the education establishment to accept more charter schools and performance pay for teachers.

The pressure campaign has been underway for months as Education Secretary Arne Duncan travels the country delivering a blunt message to state officials who have resisted change for decades: Embrace reform or risk being shut out.

I wonder if Barrack Obama will leave West Virginia out on this as he has everything else as punishment for giving him such a humiliating defeat.

I think the question is will the WV Legislature change the statutes in order to meet the requirements to obtain these funds. I am unaware of any such efforts.

I don't think that even a WV Republican Legislator would entertain the thought to suggest that they change the statutes.

Then WV won't get any of it. It's a matter of will.....do they want the federal money for the schools bad enough to change the way things are done. Why through more money on a system in failure?

NO, not bad enough to change the way things are done ... because they are worried more about their own survival than about the schools and/or students in them.

Besides, there is still plenty of Federal, State and County money in the pot. And if it runs low they will just increase taxes.

I agree with you, Sam. I just want to point out that it won't be the Obama administration punishing the citizens for not voting for him. I honestly believe the President in question believe he has god on his side and/or he is fulfilling some sort of destiny for his race.

I agree, but I waht I want explained to me is, where does Obama and the fed get the authority to put federal tax dollars in education in the first place.

Get the federal government out of education a many of the problems with education would be gone. Get the state government out of education and allow private competition and most problems would be solved.
