What should we do about economy?
Bloomberg worries me
http://wcbstv.com/campaign08/bloomberg.federal.government.2.654315.html
I am the first to admit that I know less about economics than just about anyone.
Except maybe John McCain.
So it kinda worries me when folks like Mike Bloomberg start agreeing with my take on things.
It is clear to me we are spending more than we take in, both as a nation and as private individuals.
So we are going to solve this problem by giving everyone a thousand dollars to spend on imported Chinese do-dads?
To be paid back when? And by whom?
My solution would be to quit spending money we don't have in Iraq and start re-building our basic infrastructure here at home.
But what do I know?
Admittedly not much but probably more than McCain.

Mine also, especiallly if everything not found in the constitution including messing in the affairs of foreign powers and unnecessary wars also ends.

The truth is Sherman, very few on Capitol Hill have much of a clue when it comes to the economy. I have been following the candidates and not one of them are offering what it is going to take to stimulate the ecnomy. All of them want to raise taxes. That is money taken form the economy. It is money that people aren't going to spend on goods and services. Since it is money taken from the earnings of people, they have little incentive to invest and to purchase goods. If you are really honestly desiring to help the economy, two things need to be cut, government spending and taxes. A spending cut would take pressure off the credit markets since the government would not borrow as much or any at all. A tax cut would allow folks to have more spendable income.
Now, let me tell you about the rebates our knucklehead president come up with. Mine is going to pay my federal and state taxes. All totaled Sherman My wife and I will have paid over $7,000 dollars in federal taxes. The rebate we get will cover what we owe West Virginia and the Fed. instead of going out and purchasing something with our rebate, it will go into our savings account to cover what I taking out to pay my taxes. Some stimulus package in my book, frankly it sucks.

I agree so long as we remain strong militarly in order to protect our country as needed by ALL threats throughout the world, which is the foundation of the constitution.

Re: Bloomberg worries me
Cato,
I agree that it's not going to stimulate the economy (as people will use the money prudently in many cases). I intend to pay off the debt I am going to incur by getting a new roof put on the house. The roof I was going to need anyway; this just makes my life a little easier (but, frankly, it is appreciated)

Aaron,
I believe we should have the strongest and most capable military on earth. I think our military capablity should be such that we strike fear in every other nation on earth. I agree with Ronald Reagan on this point, that the only way to have peace is through strength. That means that we have a full compliment of nuclear weapons and building more everyday, a full and ready compliemnt of anti-missle weopons. We also ought to have the newest and most battle ready airforce on earth. Our military should be able to meet any challenge anywhere on earth quickly and decisively.
One thing however, our military is used only if we are attacked or an attack is at hand. Then our military should be capable cruching the enemy and they should be allowed to do so.
Finally, I agree with George Washington in his farewell address. We should avoid entangling engagements in foreign countries.

Re: Bloomberg worries me
Ronald Reagan built a military to defeat the Soviet Union. The problem is today's enemy is not the Soviet Union. They have no military, especially an Air Force or Navy and if they use a nuke it's going to be a dirty bomb or something purchased on the black market.
While we need to maintain a conventional military to some extent, we need to focus more on small, fast, special forces that are trained to respond at a moments notice and fight in urban combat situations.
We also need to understand that an attack can be something so simple as a car bomb or a hijacked plane and we have to be prepared to respond accordingly. We also may not be able to identify specific organizations or groups so like it or not, we may have to go after states that sponsor terrorism and make them regret doing so.
Reagan had the luxury of training and preparing for an enemy he could see. It's much harder training and preparing to fight an enemy you can't see. Intelligence is the first step. Unfortunatley that is where we are the weak and where we must make the greatest strides.
