The Ego Has Landed
Despite dispatching Air Force One and Air Force Two to Copenhagen along with the President, The First Lady, The Mayor of Chicago, the Governor of Illinois, and Oprah Winfrey the City of Chicago was eliminated from consideration in the first round from cities in contention for Olympiad 2016. What a curious presentation that saw the personal ruminations of the President and First Lady as a substitute for a reasonable and practical list of selling points for Chicago as a site for the Olympics! What chutzpah! What an abysmal failure! It is stunning in its scope. What were they thinking?

Re: The Ego Has Landed
They were thinking of the 2012 Election ..... and the HUNDRED$ OF MILLION$ in Government funding that would be needed to build an Olympic Village, etc., etc.
And they already know who those building, etc. Contracts would go to.

Re: The Ego Has Landed
I loved the look of utter disbelief on the vast majority of faces in the Chicago crowd at Daley Plaza. They couldn't believe the great orator had failed them. I think they should get used to it. As time goes on, more and more of his policies are going to be seen as failures.
As for the Olympics, overall, hosting them is a net loss as more money is required to build and maintain the venues for the events then is brought in from the actual olympics itself. Atlanta, which used mostly private money, did the best even though there are those who believe it was the diversion of funds to Olympic venues that is causing many of their long term infrastructure problems now.
The city of Chicago wouldn't have been as responsible though as their bid included twice the public money Atlanta spent and with it being Chicago, we all know that number would have increased. With the post 9/11 security needed and this would have been a huge financial cost that Americans and not Chicagoans would have paid for.
I for one am glad Rio got the 2016 Olympics.

Re: The Ego Has Landed
I thought the entire thing was AWESOME!
THe people of Chicago weren't all that supportive of the idea. We all know the taxpayers would take a huge beating and the citizens would suffer major inconvenience.
I also thought it only fair Rio get the games. The Olympics have been held in various locations in the US, Europe & Asia....it is South America's turn.
The fact that The O and his bride got knocked down a peg or two was just the icing on the cake for me. I love the Olympics, man!

My first reaction was to honk the horn and raise the roof. Chicago does not deserve the Olympics.
A couple of days later, it became Bush's fault! Seriously, the suntimes had an article with democrats blaming (drum roll), George W Bush! Good Lord is that man ever powerful! He can prevent the Olympics from coming to a Democratic city after he leaves office!
Obama was mentioned as "not having enough time to undo Bush's impact." Apparently there has not yet been enough one on one talks with Ahmadinijad, removing missile defense shields from allies, continuing one war he campaigned against, while facilitating the loss of another, and other such shiva-like actions worthy of liberal worship.

Incidentally, to plug in a coffee pot at McComarck Place in Chicago, you have to be union.
That is one of many reasons that trade shows are so costly when held up there. Of course the unions wanted guaranteed jobs. Having effectively chased off good paying jobs to Indiana, Iowa, and Kentucky, they were hoping to be saved by the IOC.

Re: The Ego Has Landed
Well I think it is sad that the far right roots against our own countrymen and Old Glory just to spite Obama.
But my main concern is that people seem much more concerned with the waste potential of the Olympics than they are with the much greater risk of loss in Afghanistan.
Not just our treasure but young American lives as well.
If the republicans would start protesting that I would stand arm in arm arm with them in common cause and purpose.
But sadly the republicans are even more gung ho for another foreign occupation than Obama is.
I cant help but believe that many Democrats are willing to warm their ass at a fire that consumes young Americans with Dems in charge than they would be if ol' Boosh was still in.
8 more today.
Shame on the Democrat Party far as I'm concerned....

Re: The Ego Has Landed
Sherm,
You are a consistent fellow, have to give you that.
As for the Olympics, Chicago simply didn't deserve them. It is not a "rooting against Obama" sort of thing, at least not for me. I wish the man no ill will, I merely wish his policies to fail and his party to be replaced in charge. But as to the man himself, I truly wish him good health, a happy marriage, and anything else that I want for myself.

Re: The Ego Has Landed
I was saying the same thing a year ago sodbuster when others were saying we should get out of Iraq but Afghanistan was a worthy endeavor because of 9/11. We cannot win there, not by nation building and attempting to win the hearts and minds of the people.
The Taliban was in charge because the citizens of Afghanistan wanted them in charge. If we are to stay in that country, it should be with a very small detail of Special Forces supported by the Navy and their cruise missiles, guided bombs and air power with the sole purpose of finding OBL and that is it.
It's time to leave Iraq as well as there is nothing else we can do there. Like it or not, when we leave, that country will join forces with Iran and there is nothing short of an endless occupation that will prevent it.
Personally, I didn't root against "Old Glory" simply to see Obama fail. That’s icing on the cake as I’ve made no bones in stating I am not a fan of that man or the policies he stands for.
I simply didn't believe Chicago deserved the Olympics nor do I feel we as a nation can afford to spend what it would take to secure the games. And given that we are talking about Chicago with a Chicagoan in charge, the cost would have been passed on to all Americans.

Which city has made money on the Olympics? Beijing? London? Athens? No. No. and No. If the Daleys haven't broken Chicago the Strogers surely have. You're not doing Chicago any favor by bringing the Olympics there. Oh, I guess maybe Valerie Jarrett could unload her publicly-subsidized housing units if the Olympics took them through eminent domain... Is that what you mean?
