Apparently, whoever has the most weapons has the right to be in the location they choose. Right?

Arab claims from thousands of years are the strongest claims of all, Michael. Arab Muslims and Christians and Jews have far greater claim to the land that comprises Israel and the Occupied Territories than European or African Jews.

I suppose that's a typo, but just in the interest of full disclosure..... My ancestors are almost exclusively European. My maternal grandfather's paternal grandmother was half Wampanoag, at least that's what my grandfather said. I have no proof of that.

A Brown University professor of history once approached my father in a night club where he was singing and told him his last name indicates that we likely have some Arab ancestory going back to a Moors invasion of Italy. It is entirely possible she is correct. In fact, I'd say it is probable. My mother (with the teensy bit of Wampanoag maybe) flat out rejects this and refuses to even discuss the possibility. LOL

Now that that's out of the way, I have empathy for the people of Syria, sure I do. You'll hear me squawking about that when my country begins sending the Syrian government billions of tax payer dollars in weapons and cash. I'll begin commenting on it when they send them millions of pennies worth of weapons and cash.

As it is, I do not find the label of Arab whatsoever a negative one, and I wouldn't be in the least surprised if you were to have some Arab in ya. As for your dad singing at the nightclub, cool!!!

I do not excuse all of the actions of Israel, but I think the Palestinians and their friends do themselves no favors. Whatever the outcome is to be, I do not trust the US government, and especially not the present one, to help bring anything positive out of it.

Back to Helen Thomas, I really think that while she said something unfortunate, her ability to speak freely has been undervalued. I do not wish her ill and I am sorry for the harsh reaction directed against her. Truth be told (I'm stealing this idea but I heartily concur), she was representing dozens of other people who were there but lacked the cajones to say what Thomas said.

I think Thomas' right to freely speak her mind is of more importance than keeping out unpopular opinions. As an evangelical Christian, I fear the treatment directed at the Helen Thomas' of the world can find my direction.

Many people simply don't understand the meaning of the word "liberty". I'm convinced.

They sought asylum from the Nazi regime. Havana had turned them down. FDR did the same. Canada refused them.

The boat landed at Antwerp, and to their credit, England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands each accepted a portion of the passengers so that none had to return to Germany.

So my advice to Hispanics or any other minority group that wants to remain in good standing with liberals is don't succeed. Fail. Always be the victim. Consider Cuban refugees. In Kennedy's time, liberals embraced them. Today, not so much. Cuban refugees included too many successful businessmen.

I agree. In my classes, I urge my students to speak freely, whatever (and I mean whatever) is on their mind. My only caveat is that if they say something ridiculous, their peers will likely call them out.

Perhaps Thomas' statements in that venue indicated that she was becoming unfit for her job, but I am absolutely opposed to the apparent "quest for blood" that occurred based on the statements themselves. Let all of us enjoy our precious rights to speak freely. If freedom of speech means anything at all, it means the freedom to say something that other folks won't like.
