press can make a criminal look like he's the victim
"The press is so powerful in its image-making role, it can make a criminal look like he's the victim and make the victim look like he's the criminal. This is the press, an irresponsible press." . . . . "If you aren't careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." "At the Audubon, December 13, 1964." In Malcolm X Speaks: Selected Speeches and Statements, ed. George Breitman, 96-114. New York: Ballantine Books, 1964, 101.

Why do you quote a man that spewed the hatred Malcolm X did?

Love him or hate him, Malcolm X was right. The press can make or break a person. Our last election cycle proves it. Every time the conversation got to the point that it reflected poorly on Barrack Obama, the national media changed the topic and something new became the 'lead story' of the day.
It is how we went from Iraq as the end all be all subject in late 2007/early 2008 to the economy. Once it was evident that the surge was going to be successful and the Iraq War was not a good subject for liberals, the media started hammering the economy.
As a displaced worker, I certainly understand there are a lot of people out of work but I think that is more a result of corporations taking advantage of what the media was doing in 2008. First, it was oil speculation, which drove fuel prices through the roof and had the government wished to, they could have stopped that with liberals regaining control of Congress, high fuel prices worked well with their agenda.
As corporations used high fuel prices as grounds for eliminating often unneeded positions and waste, the media magnified the situation by hammering the economy and began prognosis’s of how bad the situation would get.
The domino effect began and what resulted is what we have today. I could elaborate but the point is, if we are truly in in a recession that mirrors the 30's, why are their lines for every new cell phone that comes out with people paying hundreds of dollars for each new gadget or IPhone that hits stores? Why have we seen a quarter of the highest grossing movies since this "recession" began? Why do we have stores dedicated solely to batteries opening? Why is it that Chrysler and GM, both of whom couldn't survive without government bailouts, are now selling throwback cars like the Camero and Charger for $30K?
So while Malcolm may have very well spewed hatred, he got this one right. The media controls the conversation and the sad part is, most Americans do not question them doing so. That is the only explanation for us knowing anything about Lindsay Lohan.
