Yes, the economy is so bad, just like it was during the great depression.

Re: The economy is soooo bad...
John Raese, Republican candidate for Senate in West Virginia, says we are in a Depression. Funny, I thought the defination of a depression was a sustained 10% downturn in the GDP.
The fact of the matter is that the economy is bad right now. Our illustrious elected leaders certainly aren't doing alot to improve matters either. However, there are sectors of the economy that are hiring. Nothing stands in the way of one learning new skills and entering a part of the economy that is growing.

Re: The economy is soooo bad...
A recession is 2 consecutive quarters of no real GDP growth although some econmist state an increase of 1.5% in the unemployment rate constituties a depression as well.
A depression is a "a sustained, long-term downturn in economic activity in one or more economies."
And I disagree with Mr. Raese. I do not believe we are in a depression. In fact, I believe our current economic woes are more made up then anything and that that large corporations are simply "milking" the continued "bad news" put forth by the government and the media.

You can't blame them. They are not going to "committ" and then get hammered with healthcare, taxes, cap n' tax, etc.
So its a "wait n' see".

Why can't I blame them Sam. Oldcastle, with annual sales exceeding 6 BILLION DOLLARS and profits ~10% meaning they make roughly 600 MILLION DOLLARS a year, give or take a million or so, laid off over 500 employees in 2009, 27 of them high ranking people within the company I worked for (we accounted for about 300 million in sales and only about 20 million in profits) including our entire engineering department and at least one production manager or higher position at almost all of their plants. This was after they closed 2 plants and severely cut back in 2008. When the finally tally was told, Bonsal American ADDED .75% from closing 2 plants and laying off over 100 people.
I personally called the news media and got little to no response. I was told, "Turn on the TV, it's happening all over." Large corporations capitalized on what the news media and government were telling us and as a result, like Oldcastle and Bonsal American, thousands of corporations who are in bed with the government are now flush with cash.
It's the reason APCO's CEO has came out and written an op-ed supporting Cap and Trade and he is not alone in spite of what you might think. It's also why so many corporations supported health care. They know that while the may pay some in taxes, by the government controlling these, taxpayers and not their businesses will foot these bill for the programs you listed above.
Think what you may but it's no coincidence that Big Government and Big Corporations growth mirror each other. It's also why there is no depression. If you don't believe me, Google the unemployment rate for individuals with a college degree.

Re: The economy is soooo bad...
Aaron, I believe it is IBM that "lays off" 6% to 8% of their workforce every year. The reason they do that is ....... because it is such a hassel, and sometimes impossible, to fire anyone. But you can lay them off, no problem. And thus you can rid your ranks of the clueless, dueless and no-productive ..... and then hire better qualified, industrious and/or more productive employees. You can also "call back" the best of the bunch that you laid off.
And Aaron, it is my learned opinion that "the reason APCO's CEO has came out and written an op-ed supporting Cap and Trade" is that it makes good business sense to have done said ....... and was the PR and PC thingy to be doing.
By APCO supporting Cap and Trade it keeps the Environmental Wackos "off their backs".
Also, APCO's support of Cap and Trade keeps them on friendly terms with the EPA, PSC and any other Government Office, Division or Regulatory Agency that is also partial to and/or supports Cap and Trade. And this is extremely important to APCO because they will be mandated to comply with all Cap and Trade Requirements which will be extremely expensive for them to implement and/or maintain and to do so they will surely be asking for various Rate Increases to cover the costs of said.
Thus Aaron, in actuality and reality, it really doesn't make a diddly poop difference to APCO whether or not Cap and Trade is implemented ......... because the public is going to pay for it ........ and APCO is still going to make even greater profits and pay dividends to their Stockholders.
Like my brother Tom once told me, Auto Insurance Companies "love it" when people wreck their vehicles because the more Accident Claims they pay off on, the more reason they have for requesting a rate increase and the better the chances they have of getting a rate increase approved.
Thus, for example, if an AIC cites 8,000 Claims that cost them $22 million as proof of a needed rate increase and the PSC authorizes a 2% increase in all policy premiums because of said, ....... that 2% increase in all policy premiums will surely return $30+ million in added revenue.
Ya get my drift, ...... accidents are "profit makers".

Re: The economy is soooo bad...
Your last post contradicted your previous post Sam. You originally indicated that the actions of business over the past couple of years is because they were going to get hammered by the government but in your last, you indicate that big business cozies up to the government so as to maintain profits.
The thing is, neither addressed my comments in that we are not in a recession.

Re: The economy is soooo bad...
The failure of a clear definition of a "recession" enabled unfair criticism of George W Bush, and I think the failure of a clear definition of "depression" enables unfair criticism of Barack Obama. I think Bush's policies were far less disastrous, but that is another matter altogether. Conservatives simply must elucidate their economic and social plans clearly and grow a spine for once, rather than the sniveling "we're not as bad as the Democrats" crapola. Show us, Republicans, how you intend to cut spending and the tax rates you propose for economic growth, and do so in English.

Aaron, you are starting to respond like Ziggy.
How many businesses do you think there are in the US? One?
And how many different types and classes of those businesses do you think there really are? Iffen there is only ONE business then there could only be ONE type or class, right.?
Must be only ONE then, right, ...... because there would at the very least have to be TWO businesses for me to be right about what I said, right?
I guess I stand corrected, sorry bout my confusion.
Aaron wrote:The thing is, neither addressed my comments in that we are not in a recession.
Me pretty sure that we are in a recession ........ because the economy is quickly receeding, ...... inflation is fastly enroaching ...... and public and private debt is vastly increasing. Its just that some don't know it and others refuse to recognize it or accept it.
But like most every January is for many people, ...... when their Christmas spending Bills come "due n' payable" they are forced to face the reality of their situation.
Robbing Peter to pay Paul only makes for a sore peter, ya know.

I wish Angelina would adopt Rte 35 between Buffalo and Henderson and finish it before the jackasses make it a toll road.
Re: The economy is soooo bad...
before the jackasses make it a toll road..
File a Law Suite and/or get a Judge to issue an Injunction against that happening.
Given the fact that the original construction and ongoing maintainence of Rte. 35 has been paid for by "your tax dollars", giving it all to a private concern for a "profit making business" would in de facto be in violation of reverse Eminent Domain.

Pray tell Sam, which classes of business can I not blame for "milking" the continued "bad news" put forth by the government and the media because “they are not going to "committ" and then get hammered with healthcare, taxes, cap n' tax, etc” and which class of businesses are cozying up to big government to maintain profits.
And you say I respond like word game Ziggy.
