Xbox blocks W.Va. gamer over town's name: Fort Gay
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Microsoft Corp. and the chief rules enforcer for Xbox Live are apologizing to a small West Virginia town and a 26-year-old gamer accused of violating the online gaming service's code of conduct by publicly declaring he's from Fort Gay — a name the company considered offensive.
The town's name is real. But when Josh Moore tried to tell Seattle-based Microsoft and the enforcement team at Xbox Live, they wouldn't take his word for it. Or Google it. Or check the U.S. Postal Service website for a ZIP code.
Instead, they suspended his gaming privileges for a few days until Moore could convince them the location in his profile, "fort gay WV," wasn't a joke or a slur: It's an actual community of about 800 in Wayne County, along West Virginia's western border with Kentucky.

I have heard there are so many three letter town names in WV because at some point, new legislation mandated that there be a post office every so many miles.
If there was a town there, it got a post office (if it didn't already have one) with the same name as the town.
If there was no town in that spot, the office got a name drawn at random out of a barrel filled with all of the three letter words in the English language.
Don't know how true it is but it makes for a good story.

It is not even believable for anyone that knows for what purpose a Post Office serves.
The majority of all said names of "places and things" were not "pulled out of a hat" but were either assigned or chosen for the purpose of "direction giving" except for the towns, stations, etc. that were established/built and named by the management of the railroads.
