More money, more money, .... its for the children.
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo teachers left taxpayers on the hook for nearly $9 million worth of cosmetic surgery last year, according to the state-appointed authority overseeing public school finances
.
The Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority found that last year's costs for elective procedures such as chemical peels and other skin treatments were up $8 million over 2004's $1 million tab for cosmetic surgery.
The procedures, provided under the teachers' union contract, accounted for 9 percent of the district's total spending on health benefits for employees and retirees, The Buffalo News reported Thursday.
About 10,000 school employees are eligible for the benefit. District officials said teachers or their dependents accounted for 90 percent of the approximately 500 people who received cosmetic surgery last year.

I had a teacher once who had so many face lifts that when she smiled it pulled her socks up.

While I don't hold teachers blameless by any means, the question that begs to be asked is why in heaven's name did any official in the school adminsitration and any politician ever agree to such a benefit?
Now I'll answer that for you. This benefit exists because, first, bureaucrats don't answer to the taxpayers, secondly, politicans buy votes with taxpayer money, and third, most taxpayers are more interested in ESPN or the soaps than what the bloodsucking politicians are doing.
The only thing this story does is further illustrate why education should be privatized.

Cato I absolutely agree. Public schools are too expensive and ineffective. If they will not improve without level field competition, then it is time to allow parents to take the cost per student of public ed and spend that on private school tuition.

We have spent in excess of $1200 on curriculum, supplies, and field trips. I'd be quite pleased if Putnam County and the state & federal government would give us a tax break on that.

That's just so far this school year. I'm not counting the stuff from January 1st for the previous year.

So far we've done our curriculum used. So far, so good. I don't see why anti-trust laws don't apply to the wretched public school system:)

I really tried to purchase as much as possible used. I could find only the writing used, and still that was no great bargain. The science purchase I made will cover 2 or 3 years and the spelling is right through high school. However, we need to purchase a decent microscope at the very least and who knows what else. Also, I will need very little for history, geography, or civics for at least a few years.
I don't think I spent more than $500 all of last year and probably only half that the year before. It gets more expensive as they get older.
