Muslim Pedophile Soldier Thwarted in Ft. Hood
AWOL Conscientious objector, Muslim, Pedophile soldier was stopped from conducting a terrorist raid on Ft. Hood, Texas. (As a CO, was his conscious offended by all killing--or just killing Muslims?)

I think a content analysis of the coverage of this guy versus that creep in Norway would be highly enlightening.

I wonder which terrorist would please Allah more? The wannabe terrorist with child porn or the one who killed infidel young people in Norway? Some days, I bet it is hard for Allah to decide.

Steph, I don't think you can lump organized religion together like that. One rarely sees Mennonites, for example, blowing things up, or Sokka Gokkai so engaged.
I think condemning "organized religion" is like condemning "nationhood" as nations, just like religious groups, may act in total (or in part) in ways that are bad.
A friend of mine pointed out, additionally, the "genetic fallacy." Some individual's lack of personal integrity does not mean that what they believe is false. Keli and I may not be the best representatives of the Christian faith, but our own shortcomings do not in any way speak to the validity of the Gospel.
People organize, Steph, and sometimes those organizations include those with whom we disapprove. Consider that your condemnation of organized religion has much in common with those who characterize the tea party by two or three individuals who show up at rallies with unfortunate signs or who say something stupid.

It seems to me that altogether too frequently religious leaders pit their followers againt people belonging to other religious groups. At this point in history it is generally acceptable to vilify Muslims across America and throught much of Europe. Not long ago it was acceptable to vilify Jews, look what that led to.
If there is a god, I can't imagine (s)he would be pleased with any of this.

I don't see all that much vilification of Muslims. I've been worshipping at Christian churches for 18 years now, and I think I've heard Muslims mentioned two or three times.

I'm genuinely pleased to hear that. Sadly, I doubt that is true of all churches, Mike.

When I mention them, it is to pray for them.

Stephanie, I don't know who has given you a low view of evangelical Christians, and I surely know some who do not do the Scriptures (or the Savior) any justice. However, the caricature of born again Christians is very far off.
We believe that God has set standards on behavior and that He has come in the flesh and died to save people from their sins, and the resulting seperation from God. Nowhere in the Christian creeds will you see anything about conversion by conquest. While I pray for my unsaved neighbors and family, I do not treat them differently than those within the body of Christ. The same holds true for people engaging in sexual behavior that I believe the Bible forbids, and for those of other religions. I believe the Bible speaks clearly to these matters and that God will judge, thus sparing me any need to. What I will not do is pretend the Bible says something that it does not.
If you know some disagreeable "wing nuts," it is probably because these unelected spokesmen are the loudest.

You're an exceptionally kind, thoughtful person, Mike. I think that is who and what you are and you'd carry that with you regardless what church you attended or religious ideology you followed.
The plain and simple fact is, most people just aren't as good as you are. You may not be willing to admit that, but it's the truth.

Once I got a ride to work just standing by the side of Rt. 2. Upon arrival, a guy took me halfway to my office and apologized for stopping short of my ultimate destination. No biggy: a third driver stopped and took me to my front door. Upon hearing about my morning he said, "Do you watch the news, Jimmy?" "Sure," I said. "Isn't it a sick and troubled world?", he asked me. "Yeah, Arnold, I guess so.." "But then," he said, "no fewer than three people have helped you already this morning. I submit that it is a good world and filled with good people."
I'm like Blanche DuBois: "I've always relied on the kindness of strangers..."

So are there elected spokesmen? Who elected them? Who are they, and how do we know they are?

Abdo refused to deploy because he did not feel that he "could deploy and be a Muslim..." However, he did feel that he could possess child pornography and plot to bomb and kill people at a restaurant?

Re: Muslim Pedophile Soldier Thwarted in Ft. Hood
I just watched A Streetcar Named Desire Monday night. One of my favorite films ever! TMC is doing a different star each day the month of August. Monday was Brando night and I watched the Wild One & On the Waterfront too. Sadly, Wednesday was Betty Davis and I was busy and missed it
Jim, I'm pretty sure I told you about my experience a couple of months ago finding Joyce Taylor staggering down Rte 34 a couple months back. What none of the news reports indicate is how far that woman traveled (covered in blood with her shirt ripped off and one flip flop on) by foot early on a Sunday evening. Without a doubt dozens of drivers passed her by and left her in that condition on their way to church for Sunday evening services.
The cold, godless Yankee was the only person who stopped to help her.

It is interesting how that works out. Some years ago my family and I were traveling up I 81 when a car verred off the highway and went over the side into a ditch, doing a coupel of flips as it did so. I was 6 or 7 cars behind the car that wrecked. One guy ahead of me and I stopped. Before the rescue squad got to the site only a couple of other people stopped. The interesting part is a number of people witnessed the accident, but only a few took the time to stop.
There are a number of good people inthe world. The sad part is we usually only get to hear about the bad ones.

Every time I read articles implying how pious Muslims are, I flash back to the fact the 9/11 hijackers spent their last evening in a strip club. Getting warmed up for their 72 virgins?
