It's an eyesore, a huge statue that well reflects its communist origins and is entirely out-of-place with the other memorials on the National Mall. MLK deserved better.

Who was responsible for the monument's manufacture? Was it made by tax dollars or by some private organization?

I am not certain. However, the heirs of MLK charged the government $100,000 to use the copyrighted image of MLK!

In 1996, Congress authorized the memorial’s establishment, and Alpha Phi Alpha, an African-American fraternity, set up a foundation to accomplish that. A Chinese sculptor, Lei Yixin, was selected to create the 30-foot sculpture, and ROMA Design Group, a company in San Francisco, designed the layout, which includes a bookstore, a wall with Dr. King’s quotations and nearly 200 cherry trees. The cost was $120 million, and organizers said they are still trying to raise the last $5 million.
The 30ft-tall statue, which forms the centrepiece of a $120 million, four-acre memorial to Dr King, opened to the public on Monday on the National Mall in Washington. It is the only memorial on the Mall that does not honour a president or fallen soldiers.
Standing in the shadow of the Washington Monument, the statue shows Dr King emerging from a mountain of Chinese granite with his arms crossed and is called The Stone of Hope.
However, there has been controversy over the choice of Lei Yixin, a 57-year-old master sculptor from Changsha in Hunan province, to carry out the work. Critics have openly asked why a black, or at least an American, artist was not chosen and even remarked that Dr King appears slightly Asian in Mr Lei's rendering.
Mr Lei, who has in the past carved two statues of Mao Tse-tung ...
More than 150 granite blocks, weighing some 1,600 tons, were then shipped from Xiamen to the port of Baltimore, and reassembled by a team of 100 workmen, including ten Chinese stone masons brought over specifically for the project.

Perhaps this is just a hat tip to the inevitable.

His daughter said that Lincoln is shown seated while "Daddy" is standing. Standing for liberty, etc. She also said that Lincoln had signed the Declaration of Independence. While I'm sure she meant the Emancipation Proclamation, I'm not sure why she found it necessary to demean his contribution to the freedom of men.

I don't get it either, Jimmy, but when I look at the mess this country is in, it is the failure to understand recent history that is more perilous to our country than the failure to understand history further back. Those who learned nothing from Carter can hardly be expected to learn anything from Lincoln.

You know the evidence (to me, at least) is not conclusive but I'm told more college students can identify Britney Spears than can identify the current vice president. Of course, she's probably been a little more exposed...
