Democrats Undecided How to End War
AP via SFGate ^ | 4/1/8 | ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press Writer

Democratic leaders returned from their spring break this week to declare that Iraq is in turmoil and that they will continue to try to force President Bush to end the war. But facing another uphill battle, party members are undecided on whether to try to cut off money or take a softer approach that is more likely to succeed.

Cowards, cutters and quitters always have a difficult time deciding what to do....

Keli,

I agree they are cowards. They are cowards because they won't do the only thing in their power to end this senseless war.

However it was we got there, we are there! I have questioned the senselessness of war--from a personal perspective vis-a-vis the much maligned Vietnam War. However, I think the fact that Saddam had attacked another country (Kuwait) in 1991 and made threatening moves toward Iran and Saudi Arabia--potentially throwing us into a World War, and since he had used WMDs against the Kurds--proving that he was not above using any WMDs that he MIGHT have; and, in light of his brutal suppression of his own people; and, whether Al Qaida was there or not prior to our invasion (I think that they were there pre-invasion), they are definitley there now--giving us the sublime opportunity to send thousands of them to their celestial 72 virgins (rather than having them take flying lessons here), I think that this war makes more sense than others.

(If any critic wonders how I can justify killing jihadists but be pro-life, all they have to do is to explain to me what violent or criminal act an unborn baby has committed that is worthy of death and I will gladly explain my supposed duplicity.)

Keli,

The problem is, they are sending thousands of Americans to early graves, and gravely injuring many, many times more. Innocent civilians are being injured and killed, many of them children. We have also displaced a large portion of the population.

On top of all this, our government is borrowing all of the money to fund this war primarily from a nation that many (including me) consider to be our enemy. We are digging our grandchildren into unbelievable debt and there is no end in sight.

We should protect our ports and borders and do a good job of screening people who wish to enter the country. We also need to keep track of those we do allow here. That will do far more to prevent the loss of American lives and destruction of American property than occupying a country on the other side of the globe.

Sam,

Why do we need to impose the REAL ID Act on American citizens to improve screening of those who wish to enter America? How will it help keep track of and monitor aliens once they arrive here?

Steph, Why do we need to impose the REAL ID Act on American citizens to improve screening of those who have AIDS, TB or those who don't attend church? geek

Steph, my question is only slightly more sillier than your's was.

Passports and Visas are the approved documents for screening of those who wish to enter or re-enter the US. To wit:

The new law requires all travelers to and from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda to present a passport or other accepted document that establishes the identity and nationality of the passport-holder to enter or re-enter the United States. Long gone are the days when you could make a verbal declaration of citizenship or show your faded Florida driver license to U.S. border officials. What does this mean? You are going to need a valid passport in order to get back home to Chicago. "The goal," according to the Department of Homeland Security, "is to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate international travelers."

As a matter of constitutional law, the fine folks at Homeland Security may not deny a U.S. citizen re-entry into the United States, but if you show up without a passport, they will perform a secondary screening to fully ascertain your citizenship. Why not avoid this trouble?

Are you funnin me or what? Razz Razz Razz

Only a GPS ankle bracelet could do that ...... if you could keep it on them that is.

Steph, who is tracking n' monitoring the 24 million+- illegals that are already here? ........ No one, ...... right.

Who is tracking n' monitoring the THOUSANDS that are here that have overstayed their Visa? ........ No one, ...... right.

Stephanie, it doesn't make any difference ...... how many times you ask me, ...... or how many different ways you ask it, ......... the purpose of the Real ID Act is not to improve screening of those who attempt to enter or re-enter the US, ....... nor is its purpose to keep track of and monitor aliens once they get into the US?

The purpose of the Real ID Act is to "show verifiable proof" that you are in fact who you say your are, ......... nothing more, ........ nothing less.

Steph, anyone who doesn't want a Real ID card ....... then they shouldn't get one.

And anyone who doesn't want to show someone "proof" of who they are ........ then they shouldn't "show" that someone their Real ID card if they have one.

Plain and simple, ........ just like they have been doing all their life concerning a Driver's License.

cheers

I'm not the one who said the REAL ID Act is required to do "what I deem necessary". You did. I'm asking you why, and you just said it won't. So what's the point?

btw.......It takes me 25 minutes to drive off this ridge. I need a driver's license.
