Knute Romney?
In the latest debate, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich also took on Romney, saying the only reason he wasn't a lifelong politician is because he came up short in his first campaign.
"Let's be candid: The only reason you didn't become a career politician is because you lost to Teddy Kennedy in 1994," Gingrich said to Romney.
"That's probably true," Romney said. "If I'd have been able to get in the NFL as I had hoped I could as a kid, why, I would've been a football star all my life, too."

HA, when I look at Mitt Romney I see a somewhat smarter, more cultured Al Gore who also followed closely in his father's "footsteps".
If one scans thru Mitt's father's "political bio" ....... and compare it to Mitt's bio, ...... its enough to scare the bejesus out of any "small government" conservative thinker.
"Like father like son", ....... nurturing effects of the parent(s), ..... intentional or otherwise, ..... has heap strong and everlasting effects on the personality and thinking of their children. ....... "You are what your environment nurtured you to be".

I am certain one can rise above (or sink below) their nurturing. I know a great many siblings who have gone very different directions in life, including my own brother and I. Having said that, there is ample reason to think twice about a Romney vote, and his dad's history is salient information.

Re: Knute Romney?
Very interesting. I didn't remember George Romney as a Rockefeller Republican but he surely was one. I think the younger Romney is a chameleon. Maybe a "Manchurian candidate"... Who brainwashed him? The Mormons. Although I'm not sure that's a bad thing...

Re: Knute Romney?
Fueled by the support from conservatives and the Tea Party, Gingrich is ahead of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney by nearly 20 points in South Carolina. The winner of that state's primary has gone on to capture each GOP nomination since 1980.
And he leads Romney by double digits in Florida, whose primary ultimately ended up deciding the party’s pick in 2008.
In a field reduced to three candidates in South Carolina, Gingrich gets the support of 48 percent of likely voters, Romney gets 30 percent and Paul gets 12 percent.

I think your chameleon hypothesis is valid, but who can say? Perhaps he has gradually grown to accept conservatism over the years.
